Early Fall Sideboard and Vintage Basket Bouquet

A couple of weeks ago, I was out in the garage sorting tubs full of fall florals. Our garage is temperature controlled, otherwise I wouldn't have been able to do that. The previous owners  were very innovative and vented the sunroom AC into the garage, so thankyou! My fall tub count is far and away the most, even compared to Christmas décor. I was gathering like florals and took out these realistic looking straw/paper black eyed susans from the others. I just randomly stuck them in the old funeral basket which was within reach for later.

When I was finished and putting things back in place I actually looked at the old wicker basket and was amazed how they looked so pretty sitting in there without even a thought or styling. That's one of the things I love about fall... You can mix and match and stash and forage; sticking it all in one receptacle and still have it look amazing. (Almost like you actually planned it!)

So I brought it in and made a spot on the old family sideboard simply by moving over the tureen of faux pears. Two very old ironstone pitchers are on either side and some small ironstone pieces are along the top shelf above the mirror. I'm loving the wonderful fall colors and rummaged around through my vintage linen tea towels to find my gold ones, which are in great shape considering their age.

I'm always amazed at the needlework time and effort that was put into these tea towels and linens that were used regularly for drying hands and dishes. The top one has a dove design and the below one is a sampler of stitch patterns.

Pears start showing up in late summer and are a go-to "filler" throughout winter.

I've mentioned before, my "God Bless Our Home" Eastlake Chromolithograph probably from the late 1800's. It's still in the original Eastlake painted frame, but I had to have the glass replaced. I love the contrasting black accent that it gives to the room.

Along the long wall which is the walk way in the hearth room to the kitchen, sets my sideboard, these lunch hampers, my old picket fence gate and then my cookbook cupboard. It's so fun to change up these old pieces for the seasons. I'll share the cookbook cupboard soon.

These vintage baskets were originally different shades of natural wicker, so when we moved here I just splashed a healthy dose of white paint over them and stacked them here on the long wall. I love my old picket fence and found it in the backyard area of an antique shop in a small town close by. That amazing paint patina is original. I just scrubbed years of dirt and grime off of it once I brought it home to my kitchen.

My older daughter knows I adore vintage linens and my taste in new ones, so lately she's been buying me wonderful seasonal pieces from Williams Sonoma. This pomegranate design is perfect for this time of year. I found this little poured concrete pumpkin many years ago and bring it out each year. It's one heavy little gourd!

Thanks so much for coming by to visit. I hope you're having a great Labor Day weekend and that your weather is wonderful. Here are a few more posts with the sideboard dressed up for fall.

  5. The natural 'messy beauty' of Fall is my favorite. Plants and flowers are half dead yet still have pretty blooms. Like you said, you don't even need to try to make a pretty arrangement so make it look nice..Fall stems just naturally do that! I adore all of those white baskets stacked up and that yellow linen is just gorgeous. Such lovely vignettes, Debra! Thanks for sharing at Home Imagined today!!

  10. What a beuatiful arrangement my friend! and the Chromolithograph is a treasure. I totally agree with you about the embroidery on the tea towels... I cringe thinking about wiping my hands on them.

  12. Debra, for just plopping those little strawflowers into the basket, they look fantastic! Love how beautiful your sideboard looks for fall... Really pretty!

I would like to ask you how you painted your sideboard? You wouldn't remember the paint brand/color, would you? It looks like you distressed it a bit after painting. Any sanding before painting? I'm just asking as I may have to totally paint our new-to-us buffet since it did have strong cigarette odors (and just strong wood smell, as well) and now I am sealing it really well. It is helping, thankfully, as it sits in the garage to keep airing out.

Enjoy your lovely sideboard with its festive fall look,
    Barb :)
