Sweet September in the Cupboard

When the calendar page turns to September something happens in my head and heart. I love Fall and seeing September roll around lets me know that the colorful foliage, cooler days, and cozy nights will soon be here.

Of the four seasons, fall is the most complex and to me the most beautiful. In early fall it's often still warm and I try to stick with lighter colors and textures. October is a world of it's own with the brighter colors of gold, oranges and reds taking over. As November comes, the weather changes to colder days and nights that call for comfy quilts and blankets. Longer, darker days lend themselves to darker hues and deeper color.

In October the cupboard is accented with pumpkins, but September is the perfect time for pears. Last year I found some twiggy connected pears that I attached to longer sticks foraged from our yard. At any given day I can find "sticks" in the yard from our many oak, walnut and hickory trees.

My colorful faience with summer color retires at the end of August and the Brown Transferware takes it's place in the Cupboard. White ironstone and all my many hodge podge pieces of transferware that always mix and match, sit stacked and side by side. So many patterns and pieces from pitchers to plates to teapots.

Fall is the perfect time to bring out my little porcelain chipmunk figurines. I have two (live ones) that live in the back area. One on either side of the porch. Early morning and afternoon I can see them scampering around collecting acorns and hickory nuts. They also scavenge seeds from the bird feeders till their little cheek pouches are full. First week of October has been "Baby Reveal" week. For the last 4 years that's when the baby chips come out of their underground nest quarters. Mom is always nearby keeping an eye on them.

I have my dried sunflower wreath hanging on the outside of the cupboard doors this month. I'm still using sunflowers in September for flower arrangements, but usually by  October they are replaced with colorful fall leaves and berries.

An orange plaid ribbon gives it a bit more fall pizzaz.

My most recent vintage metal basket purchase is filled with old clay pots and faux bittersweet and sitting on top of my chippy vintage stepladder.

Here are a few posts from the past from the early fall Holiday Cupboard. Restyling the cupboard in September is always a joy, and always a bit different. Brown Transferware is my favorite look, and it's fun to bring out "fallish" décor and pieces.

  1. Love the vignette on your chippy ladder. I cannot believe September is almost over too. The nice weather has been lovely and I do not want to see it go. Have a good week. Hugs. Kris

  2. Although my style is quite different from yours I always get seasonal ideas from you. I completely agree with your color changes through the fall months. It's more fun just doing a progressive change than a complete re-do.

  6. The chipmunks are so cute Debra, I wish I could see them here. I only seem to have a mischievous squirrel that has taken up residence in our backyard. Although, I am not sure if it is the squirrel or our pup who is more ornery. I get a chuckle nearly every morning from them both. The squirrel travels the cable lines out back, and out pup runs the width of the yard chasing him. I love it when the squirrel begins clicking his tongue, and the tail begins waving back and forth as he gives Bentley the what for. Your cupboard looks lovely, it appears you are certainly ready for fall. I know I am, the brisk mornings have been a welcome change here. Hope you are doing well!

    1. I much prefer the chipmunks to squirrels. The squirrels are destructive and have chewed up my back porch furniture and pillows. Pretty smart though, haha. Hope you're having a great weekend!

  7. Your cupboard is styled SO beautifully for the season, Debra! Those pear stems are such a different and unique touch over pumpkins or gourds! The green pairs so nicely with your stunning brown transferware collection. I'm always inspired by your decorating!
