Updating a Fall Pumpkin Topiary

The winner of the ugliest pumpkin contest...

Oh, did you miss that contest?
Well, if there would have been one
I would have been the winner, hands down!

(after makeover)

yep, I had some pretty uuuuuugggglllly fugly pumpkins.

A few years ago I made a pumpkin topiary for my entry.
I still liked it,
but the elusive "lumina" pumpkins have been my muse.

(before makeover)

so I grabbed my trusty paint brush and transformed those babies into,
if not things of beauty...
well at least better!

Welcome to my laboratory!

A coat of this gray mixture slathered on all my projects as an undercoat...

The babies awaiting final touches...

multiple coats to look more dimensional...

I know I'm only about the 500th person to show their painted pumpkins,
but I really did enjoy giving them an updated look.

Say Hello to this fella below,
He was the culprit.
no before photo...
too hideous...
Alligator skin syndrome...

at least now he's presentable...
blending in...
hanging out with the others in the wagon on the porch.

And now everyone's back together again in the Entry Hall!

ta da!!

And for another of my Fall projects...

Fun vintage key pendant with some Fall flavor

I'm updating this post to join in for

Thanks so much for coming to visit.

  1. Debra, nice laboratory and love the new looks of the pumpkins and gourds.

  2. I love that topiary! Fantastic! I especially like the pale blueish/greenish pumpkins. I want to try something like that with some at my house.

  3. Debra, fantastic pumpkins! I hope you will share them at my linky party on Thursday! ♥

  4. Oooo, so halloweeny...your own laboratory and all!
    I love your new necklaces...fabulous!!

  5. Well, they turned out to be just beautiful! Love the slightly different shades of color! And the urn is awesome!!! :)

  6. You made me laugh out loud. Love your pumpkins now. What an ordeal and set up you had going!

  7. Love your new pendants, Debra! I found my glued together white pumpkins that I got from Michael's a couple of years ago. Now I need a black urn to set them in! I have the perfect spot outside our new front door.

  8. I love how the new color scheme goes with your entry table. Just perfect.

  9. I like your new pumpkins now! They went through an entire new birthing process didn't they? You did a good job making them look so realistic with your crafty paint. They look cute in the wagon too.

  10. You are amazing Dr. Debra!

    Susan and Bentley

  11. Your wonderful paint treatment and elegant container came together to create a very lovely topiary!

  12. I love the ide for painting them white, it's nicer than the orange collor!

Well, you've just inspired to gather up my 50% off coupons and go buy some funkins!!!!

Debra, I just created a Facebook page for Motley Junket....would love it if you would like us!!

  18. Can I be the only one who likes the BEFORE better?

  21. Love it all!! Great job. I'd love for you to link up to my Wickedly Creative Halloween Ideas Party.

  22. Like the white pumpkins, all that orange can be sooo overpowering, especially if your home tends to lighter colors. Thanks for sharing that was a great project, Laura Cottage and Broome

  23. Wow you did a super job painting those pumpkins! That is a great project and after seeing the prices of real pumpkins this year I think I am going out and buying ones that will last for years!

    bee blessed

  24. Debra we had the same lab going on in my house. Your pumpkins look fabulous. When I worked as a designer we made tons of pumpkin topiaries. I love them but wouldn't you know I don't have one of my own! I think I may have to remedy that . Of course I'll wait until the pumpkins go on clearance because I'm cheap lol.

  25. Your topiary looks like a million, Debra dear. What a change -they looks beautiful, love the shine on them, and how you placed them near your fantastic table.
    Hugs and x

  26. Debra, this is such a cute post! Made me laugh! Your pumpkins, however, are fabulous! They look so great after time spent in your laboratory! (insert evil laugh here)

    Lou Cinda :)

I've been following you for a while now and just adore you!

    Anyway....GORGEOUS pumpkin topiary!!!!

  29. Absoutely love this, but also like the before. Great styling

  30. Not so ugly anymore. Great makeover. I had an urn just like that. I let it go, and wish I hadn't.
