Patriotic Tablescape with Red and Blue Transferware

A few weeks ago I was on a mission to find white vintage swirl plates. My mom had had a set back in the 70's and I had an American knockoff version back in the 80's. Those were long gone by now, but I wanted a white plate that could be used for any season or holiday to set a family table.

Our casual dining area is in the garden room/sunroom at this house and it's a perfect spot for spur of the moment dinners or take-out with our kids. It's filled with "garden-y" antiques and plants, and definitely, let me repeat, casual

Since I had located 10 dinner plates from Ebay and local vintage markets, I thought I would put together a casual patriotic table with the Staffordshire plates and a mix of red and blue transferware.

I was also searching for affordable blue transferware bread and butter or dessert plates but could only come up with a set of blue transferware saucers. So please bear with me and let me take a little leeway, so I could have a colorful stack of dishes for this meager attempt at a tablescape.

What grabbed my attention were these saucers which are also Staffordshire with a "swirl" pattern called Bluebrook. The red transferware salad plates are Johnson Bros Old British Castles. This crystal water glass was from my wedding crystal. I cannot find it online, but it's from the 70's so definitely "vintage". I thought it might be Fostoria, but cannot locate it. It also came in green, but I chose the blue at the last minute to play off the blue in my wedding "china", which is a French Faience.

I'm using my old Blue Willow tureen that I shared last week on the sideboard for a low visual centerpiece. On either side I'm using two of my small white ceramic houses with small flags.

I usually use these little houses at Christmas, but thought they looked perfect for a July 4th table. I love using flags as accessories in most anything. They can give you an instant patriotic vibe anywhere in the house.

I made this khaki, cream and red grain sack style fabric table runner about eight years ago. I think it works for summer and early fall tables, and with the stripes, works well for July 4th.

A set of four white vintage French linen tea towels are used as a placemat, with a set of vintage red stripe luncheon napkins which compliment the striped theme. The antique postcards add a fun nostalgic graphic to each place setting.

Thanks for coming by, hope you're having a great week!

  9. Love the plate stack and patriotic flair, Debra! Those little saucers have a great pattern in Bluebrook, and I love the sort of pinwheel effect you're getting with the white swirl and that one. Don't sell yourself short calling it meager. It's a really nice looking tablescape!❤️🤍💙🇺🇸

  11. You have a lovely tablescape here Debra, I wouldn't worry about what others think, you do you. It looks great, and I like to think these days there are no rules. I work a lot with what we have around the house, and I try not to take my decor too seriously. It's always been my outlet for stress, and if I think too much about it, then it takes away from the fun of it. Hope you have a Happy 4th, and you get to enjoy this tablescape with friends and family!
