Potting Bench Beginnings

Over the weekend we were able to get alot accomplished by renting a U-Haul trailer, and with the help of our son-in-law, we emptied out one whole unit and then combined the last two. We started this a year ago with 4 big units that are climate controlled, so we were spending big bucks each month just to store all our stuff.

When I use the word "we" it is loosely. If it hadn't been for our s-i-l who is a spacial and organizational genius it wouldn't have gotten done. I had been waiting to get the outside furniture over for what seems like ages. We had to have the deck rebuilt this Spring before we could get all the stuff over. That was finished last month, so now we have a blank slate.

This is just a little of what I'll be working with. I have a cute chippy shelf that was in my office at the old house, that I'm hoping I can use out here, too. Everything has a coat of dirt and grime on in that will have to be cleaned off, but oh, am I glad to see it all again!

The guys just piled things back here, but I'm excited to get started making it a functional and cozy space. I love the first image of the potting bench. It reminded me of mine, with the build and distressed painted surface. I'd like to be able to use this potting bench for a buffet counter too for cookouts or casual dining. This is under the deck, and part of the walk out basement patio, so it's still going to get some of the weather on it. I'd like to get some galvanized metal sheeting for a table top protector. Don't know if that's possible, but an idea. Any of you try galvanized sheeting before?

We unpacked a gazillion boxes that were full of my patio, porch, gardening, and sun porch decor. I had sold a ton of it before we moved, but I still have plenty for this area. The park bench, a salvaged wood coffee table, and some wicker pieces are out here too. More on those when I can get things cleaned up and styled a bit. That strange thing in the upper left corner is a fountain, hopefully it's still works.

So, here's my blank slate to work from. I was going through my Pinterest Board on Potting Benches for some inspiration, and found these photos from the BHG.com site. Most of these images were new to me, and some really great inspiration ideas.

I have most of these garden-y elements, now, just to get organized.

metal chicken feeder/shelf

fruit baskets

milk carrier

step ladder and watering cans

metal gym basket

wicker baskets for tools

seed packets to display

vintage glass jars for seeds and garden markers

and of course the potting bench

so adorable!

Now, if I only had the shed...

  19. Debra, I can't wait to see it when you've got everything in it's place! I had pinned a lot of the same images. Love, love the potting bench! We are just starting on a potting shed. I mean that the grass has been removed from the hill and hubby staked out where it would go and started digging down for the foundation boards. Doing it ourselves so it will be slow go. My sil built a shed a couple years ago and called and asked me if I had any ideas as to what to use for her table top. I told her galvanized metal and she had a man make it for her. It turned out darling! Thanks for sharing with sYC.

  20. Hey Debra, well it's been such a long time since I last stopped in..life has been so unbelievably busy for us .. with moving. Just had to say that your home decorating is as beautiful as always such a pleasure to see all you do in your home. This post caught my eye with your 4 storage units .. we have 2 - 26 ft long trucks full of our belongings sitting in storage waiting for us to find our new home so they can be delivered .. it was such a job loading them in 6 days and I'm sure not looking forward to the unloading process ... I think your working on your storage over time was the way to go definitely. I know you all moved and downsized are you still close to springfield ? Hope all is going better with your health also you are often in my prayers. Blessings Sara
