Studio Vignettes

When we moved over here to the smaller lease house I was really selective about what came with us. All my studio/office furniture came with me except for my big reading chair and ottoman, and my work desk. This "bedroom", is quite a bit smaller, and only necessary items made the cut. But I did need some fun decor to make it feel like home.

I've had several neutral suitcases strewn about the other house, so most of them landed in here. This is just one stack that's sitting on the old punched tin cupboard. My moss covered "O" that used to be on the Entry Hall mirror didn't work here at the new place so it's propped here against these old cases.

The bottom two cases are just a heavy cardboard with a celluloid handle, but their color is wonderful. I doubt that this kind of luggage lasted long back then. The gorilla from the old American Tourister luggage commercial would have destroyed it in one sitting. You have to be over 50 to remember this one...te he.

I still love this commercial after all these years, just brilliant.

Instead of the work table, my little Italianate desk from the Living Room is here. Just big enough for my birdcage, a plant and a few birdie books. We don't see many birdies, but I do hear a mourning dove "couple" each morning early. This room faces north so it has wonderful morning light.

So far, the kitty girls haven't realized there are delicious plants right here,
I imagine it's just a matter of time.

I just recently found a new pair of wonderful chunky wooden lamps,
I'll share those soon.

This is the top of the tv armoire. More edible cat snacks up here, but it's kinda high, so they're too lazy to try to find a way up here.

I stashed my camera lens and books in the make-up case. I love these old "train cases", and have collected a few, this one has it's owner's initials in gold, "V.M.B."

Do you make up names for mysterious monogrammed items?
Victoria Mae Billingsly...
Veronica Marie Barnes...
Violet Mabel Barker...
Velma Martha Burgess...

I'll show you the rest of the room when it's presentable. Right now since I'm short on space, my ironing board is in here. Nothing like an ironing board to ruin a wonderful vintage sanctuary.

I hate to iron...about as much as I hate to dust.

It's warm today, but back in the '40's tomorrow,

Virginia Martinia Benedict

  1. Oh Debra, it all looks great!... love your old suitcases... and the V.M.B?... why, it stands for "Vintage~lovin' Missouri Babe"... you of course!... see, it was meant to live with you!... xoxo Julie Marie

  2. I love this post! Your suitcases and over night case are so pretty. Great idea to stash your camera lens inside! After seeing your punched tin cupboard in white, I might have to paint mine!! :) Take care!

  3. Love your vignettes and the suitcases are terrific. I am going to be on the look out for a few to make an end table with. When I think of the one I gave away - oh well can't cry over spilled milk as they say.
Great post and looking forward to seeing the rest.

  4. Sure enjoyed my visit to your beautiful blog. Just love this many favorite things all in one place - vintage suitcases, a train case and best of all - that amazing pie safe! :-)

  5. You've done a great job styling areas in the bedroom. I remember my mom using a train case for all of her toiletries etc when she traveled. You hardly see those anymore!

  6. You did a great job displaying your suitcases. So different and eye catching. Also your vignette is very nice. Thanks for sharing. Denise

  7. I love seeing you style your home even though it's temporary - a true stylist. I would probably throw in the towel and just wait for the permanent stay. I have a great little train case that has cruise stickers all over it - pretty cool to have found it and yes, I do remember the gorilla commercial. :)

  8. Love all of your wonderful suitcases, and the natural and spring touches in the room, too!

  9. Wow Debra, you sure have everything looking wonderful in your temporary home. I share your love for old suitcases and the initial one is a real cutie. Love your style.

  10. Your room looks like home now...well at least temporarily and on a smaller scale. I love the suitcases, I so wish I had a place for something like that stacked up. And your last vignette is lovely. I'm sure the kitties will be sniffing around soon enough! :)

  11. Debra - Your home is looking so good! I love your stacked suitcases. Everything is so pretty.

  12. Debra,
Love the stacked suitcases. You have some really awesome ones. They look great.

  13. Haha my sister's name is Vicki Maree and our maiden name started with 'B'!!! So cool - I just love looking into your rooms!!
    Suzyq xx

  17. Love it all but the suitcases caught my eye. Just found a cute little vintage piece of luggage recently too and love it. Hugs and blessings, Cindy

  18. It looks wonderful, Debra! I love all your old suitcases. I'm always on the prowl for them but have only found one at a thrift store for $4! Yours are absolutely beautiful!~~Angela

  19. Debra,
Love your vignettes, your vintage suitcase collection is really attractive. I have some stacked in my bedroom and are great for storage. I adore your train case! Absolutely gorgeous. OH and I think your O is really lovely.

  20. Everything is looking amazing. I love your stack of suitcases and the bird books you've used.

  21. I remember that commercial. I love all old suitcases. Even the ones that gorillas have been beating up on. xo Laura

  22. Love your displays! They are very creative and decorative! I like the use of birds and bird cages in my decor as well. ;)

  23. As always you come up with the pretties vignettes. Love your suitcases, I have one, but our Charmer is really small and can't find a space to use it in. I remember that commercial (well over 50). I really love those bird books on your table. Well nice chatting with you Virginia Martinia Benedict
    Valeda Marie Barbeauld

  24. I remember the commercial, too. It's amazing that the old luggage has survived all these years, but our fairly new luggage is in shambles! You've been busy nesting and it's looking good!

  26. Debra,
    (Take Two)
Love your vintage sanctuary, dear friend!!!
The vignette within the birdcage is quite inspiring!
(I'm doing something quite similar for our Spring Booth.)
Love the Nothern Light streaming through the windows!!!
Our mourning dove couple have returned, also.
    Affectionately named, Maude & Claude.
I've enjoyed a few days with the Patio doors open!!!

  27. I love the stack of suitcases. I certainly remember that commercial. You studio looks like it is going to be adorable.

  28. It looks beautiful, Debra. I love your stack of suitcases with the moss letter and the cupboard they're sitting on.

  29. Well, you've got to love that gorilla! I used to have the greatest old suitcases that I finally got rid of because my kids would groan, "realllllllly Mom?" How I wish I had them now to create a spunky stack somewhere with a moss initial! I do have a birdcage though~ thanks for the fun and inspiration

  30. It looks like you're settling in beautifully! Love the decor of this room! It looks so fresh and full of spring sunshine! I hope your cats don't discover your plants! Hugs, Leena

  31. You just have the touch! Big space, small know how to infuse charm and character and warmth! I love it! Popped over here from Have a Daily Cup of Mrs. Olson :)

  32. I adore vintage suitcases, and use my Grandmothers old suitcases in my own studio for storage.

  33. Debra, I love the VMB names! And yes, I do that too. Your stack of suitcases are wonderful. Perfect spot for your letter O. I recently picked up a large plastic O at a thrift for $1. Remembered yours, and want to try covering it with moss. It's much more rounded, but might be fun. Suitcases make great storage, don't they? I remember that commercial, loved it too! Thanks for sharing with SYC.

  34. Love that commercial, how fun. I do love your suitcases and all of your vignettes are fabulous. Thanks tons for linking to Inspire Me. Hugs, Marty
