A Cozy Winter Mantel and Hearth Room

Hey Friends, welcome to the Cozy Winter Home Tour hosted by our friend, Amber from Follow the Yellow Brick Home. If you've come from Marty's place, A Stroll Thru Life then Hello, so glad you've come by.

Anytime I hear the word "Cozy" along with winter, I automatically think about climbing under a comfy warm blanket by the fire. My favorite "cozy" spot is here in the Hearth Room which is part of our open plan kitchen. The previous owners were using this area as a dining area, but as soon as I walked into this space I knew that I'd use it as a casual sitting area. It's not a large space, but that's one of the reasons I think of it as "cozy".

We purchased this slipcovered sofa, chair and ottoman in an off-white heavy linen/canvas type fabric when we bought this house. They work perfectly as a neutral base for seasonal decorating. I change up the vibe in this room multiple times a year by changing up quilts, blankets and pillows. This winter I'm using some of my wool and Tartan plaid blankets. I did a post on these great winter decor accessories this last weekend and you can read that post here.

I made an easy transition from Christmas to winter on the mantel this year. Here's a pic of my Christmas mantel which is basically the same elements minus the evergreen branches and red berries. I was using two grapevine cones painted white, which were replaced with another set of winter topiaries in faux cedar. The metal house lanterns, ironstone pitchers and a framed French canvas stayed put.

My very old pressed paper goose decoy also stuck around, I just changed out his grain sack ribbon from red stripes to black stripes. He still has a fluffy evergreen nest in the old copper boiler here on the hearth.

I found this wonderful framed grain sack fabric late last fall on Etsy, and knew it would be a piece I could use throughout the year with a Country French feel.

I usually like to do more neutrals after Christmas, but this year I decided to bring out a few of my wool blankets and wool Tartan throws. And because there is a bit of red in the blankets I'm using these rusty red toile pillows. I didn't want to do "Christmas Red", but this is a darker brownish red that didn't make me feel like Christmas decor was out again.

I love the brown and cream with the deep red on the toile.

This is a current Pendleton blanket that I bought new several years ago, and I'm using it with my Burberry look-alike Thomson Plaid Tartan from Scotland that I bought last year. The brown plaid throw is vintage from Faribo.

This large floral needlepoint pillow was found years ago at a vintage market.

My bare evergreen "Christmas tree" is still out so I can enjoy it a few more weeks until spring. It's hard to give up the "twinkle", especially on a gray, cold day.

My TV is hiding inside the antique armoire.

You might see my ticking quilt peeking out from under the throw. I love mixing patterns and ticking goes with almost everything.

A large 3 wick birch bark candle gives an added level of cozy to the atmosphere. It's setting in a lidless Staffordshire ironstone tureen. I never leave these candles going when I'm not around. They may look rustic, but they are also flammable.

Thanks so much for coming by. We hope that you're having fun this winter and finding some inspiration that fits for your decor style. We hope you'll continue the Hop and take a peek at what our friends are up to for "after Christmas" winter decor. Head on over to visit our friend Laura at Decor to Adore.

  2. This makes me want to snuggle up ASAP Debra! I love all the cozy touches you've added to your hearth room. It's amazing how just trading out a little bit of greenery and berries changed the look completely. The plaid blankets - gah be still my heart - I love them! Sending you lots of hugs and happy winter, CoCo

  3. Debra, it's always a treat for me to view your cozy abode. I love the idea of neutral slipcovers and hope to do that in my living room soon. I have lots of tartan throws to layer, and Sadie like to snuggle up in them on the sofas and chairs. Love the mantel transition. I do much the same, remove the greens and gently move into winter mode. Thanks for sharing. I'm serving a winter tea over on my blog today, joining Mary and Pam for Tea on Tuesdays. Please come join me.

  14. It's definitely a cozy winter hearth room! I didn't realize how much of the garden room you can see from certain areas, I love that you can enjoy the fire and some of that sunlight and garden inspo too. I am wanting to create a little sitting area like this off our kitchen in the new house. We are flip-flopping the original kitchen and dining room, opening a wall between and the space that we were going to make a dining room just seems to want to become a casual and cozy sitting room. Lots of options but this post has me leaning toward that idea. Thinking about putting farm table in the sunroom for a new look altogether. We will see!
Love that needlepoint pillow and of course all your woolen treasures! We are also shopping for slipcovered sofas. Went to ikea but their covers were either too white or too tan, so I am talking to a seller on Etsy who makes custom covers and ordering samples.

Thanks for joining the hop! Stay cozy!
