Vintage Cottage Weekend: Neutral Winter Dining Room with Paperwhites

Are you looking for a festive look for New Year's Eve that can move into January with just a bit of tweaking? One of the first places that I start making a transition from Christmas to "Winter" is in the Dining Room. I like to move into a more neutral palatte, but still have a bit of sparkle and festive candlelight for New Year's Eve.

Paperwhites are my go-to January flowers and arrangements after Christmas. I used to plant dozens of paperwhites from late October through February, but for the last several years I've found these lovely faux bulbs and flowers and they make for a much easier quick change up after for after Christmas into spring.

I love the real bulbs and flowers, but beside the stinky blah aroma, it's a bit of a mess to keep multiple containers going at once. It seems like overnight they get too big and keel over.

I'm using a pottery vase that's the perfect size for a nice bundle with a grapevine "wattle" as a collar to help keep the individual leaf spikes together. Just like real paperwhites, the faux version can easily fall to the side of the arrangement.

I'm using the heavy concrete reproduction French alter candlesticks, mercury glass candle votives and heavy Germam glass glitter Christmas trees. The height difference in the candlesticks becomes less noticeable by stacking them on small book volumes.

Often the Dining Room has a Red Tartan or darker tablerunner for Christmas, so in January I bring out a lighter, brighter version and layer linen and burlap for a tablerunner.

Later in the evening by candlelight...

The buffet has a white dough bowl filled with votive candles and metallic ornaments.

This small faux evergreen tree is decorated with a woodland theme. Since it's not overtly "Christmas", it will stick around for a while here in the winter white Dining Room.

Birds, owls, rabbits and deer adorn the rustic little tree with pinecones.

Thanks so much for coming by friends, I love and appreciate you all and I'm so thankful you choose to be here visiting. I'm praying you all have a blessed and happy 2023!!

  3. Oh gosh, that's all so gorgeous, Debra! From the little tree with woodland creatures, to the dough bowl filled with orbs to the dining table and that beautiful evening glow - WOW! Now, this makes me wish I hadn't put it all away. I love the faux paperwhites (I did real ones once, and couldn't stand the smell)! I bought white poinsettias this year so those are in my dining room, and I'm trying to figure out another arrangement or two to keep the doldrums away and still be winter cozy.

  4. Your dining room looks beautiful. Love the paperwhites. I am thinking lots of wood and natural with whites to replace all the Christmas decor. Happy New Year. xoxo Kris

  5. Debra, I have delighted in reading this post. I, too, like to use winter whites through January. I simply filled a low white dish with white cyclamen and left my tabletop woodland tree on the buffet. It's warm and cozy, yet fresh.
    Happy New Year!

  6. Oh my goodness it's so beautiful and magical for the New Year! I love those little trees on the table, the mercury glass and of course the paperwhites. I have misplaced several of my faux paperwhites and it has been driving me crazy trying to find them for weeks!

The dough bowl with the bulbs is wonderful, and the little woodsy tree is perfect for January!

I hope you have a blessed New Year ahead!

  7. I'm so glad to hear that I'm not the only one who thinks that paperwhites stink! Once was enough & I've never used them again. I will definitely be looking for faux ones. Love how they look in your pottery vase.

Your home is so pretty for winter...fresh and clean and. OMGGGG I ADORE that woodland tree!! Where did you get all those precious ornaments?? I want to do this type of tree SO badly now next year...if you could give me some ideas on where I could find those little critters for it that would be amazing!

  10. Debra - I also love paperwhites! They are my "go-to" flowers in the winter. They last so much longer than cut flowers and are so fun to grow. Your house looks absolutely beautiful. Thank you for sharing this on the Home Imagined link party.
