Winter Farmtable in the Garden Room

I've come to realize when transitioning from one season or holiday to the next, that I need to think about my floral arrangements early on. I'm a big believer in keeping my decorative floral containers true to season and reflecting what I might see in nature.

Winter and January are a bit lacking in color and blooms outdoors, so in otherwords... brown and shades of neutrals. Dark gray and brown with sticks, beige and tan with dried seasonal grasses and dried hydrangeas heads. Oh, and lots of evergreen including hollies, boxwoods, cedar and other dormant shrubs.

Last fall I found some faux pears that I attached with floral tape to foraged sticks then added to evergreens for a natural look on the farmtable in a vintage wooden tote. I love that look and have kept the pear branches throughout late fall and Christmas, and now into the winter months. Here's the post where I first used the faux pear branches.

I like to keep things mixed up a bit so I wanted to use my large olive bucket for a container on the table this month. I started with a base of mixed faux evergreens; then added faux hydrangeas, a few green poinsettia blooms and the pear branches. I love using winter fruit as an accompaniment in wreaths and arrangements throughout fall and winter, and the pears work from late summer till spring.

At Christmas I was using a red Tartan plaid tablerunner but that's been replaced with a large antique French linen curtain panel. I found the fabric several years ago from a European textile dealer at my fave vintage market. It's very old and has been mended several times, but if folded carefully it can be used as a runner. On top are 2 burlap grain sacks sewn together for a small runner/topper.

Nature's Neutrals for a Winter Farm Table

My fois bois pear pitcher, a small figural pear porcelain box, vintage fruit stand berry boxes, and a brown toile tea towel are grouped on my whitewashed bread board.

Evergreens and pinecones leftover from Christmas are perfect for winter decor fillers. They add texture that helps when color is at a minimum.

Closer to Valentine's Day, decor will take on a bit more color. I love to enjoy the cozy, comfy feels of January.

I hope you're enjoying January. Our weather has been above average temps with a few cold days mixed in. The birds are a little confused as they are thinking "nesting". I've witnessed several tussels between sparrows and finches scoping out the birdhouses. A sparrow couple planted themselves on a birdhouse yesterday for the whole day, just daring any other bird to tresspass...They're not there today. And a large group of robins are here, but who knows for how long. We don't usually have robins in January. I keep water pans out for the critters and yesterday at 60 degrees the birds were more interested in a bath rather than a drink. Give it a week... we'll all be freezing again.

  1. I love these neutrals! I am gravitating back toward more color as I think about decorating the new house but I will always love this look. Your table linens are gorgeous! Love that fabric runner and the tea towel. I also wanted to ask if you could message me about your garden room blinds? Beautiful winter decor Debra!
