Transitioning a Fall Entry to Thanksgiving

Have you ever finished up a vignette or decorated an area for a seasonal look, that appealed to you at the time, only to come back the next day, scratch your head and take it all apart and start over? Well, this happens with me, and that's not a good sign. During the early Fall I shared a post using this vase filled with hydrangeas, fall flowers, and sunflowers, but the very next day when I looked at it, I was over it... Got rid of the sunflowers and fall flowers then added colorful leaves instead.

A few weeks ago I decided to just add in my Thanksgiving elements
and call it done for Fall.
I like the lighter Fall colors and textures in September,
but when it's time for Thanksgiving I tend to use the darker hues.

A small faux bittersweet twig is wrapped around the mirror,
and I brought out more of my velvet and tapestry pumpkins.
They replaced my concrete pears that were here in early Fall.

My little "floral baskets for all seasons"
are full of leaves, a pumpkin, and a tiny birdie.

I love using these little baskets throughout the year.
In February I filled them with ferns and ivy
for a fun early Spring look.

I may have to try out a Christmas look this year with them.

If it's Thanksgiving you'll find this wonderful vintage print,
on the entryway console.

I've been trying to mix things up for the seasons,
since I haven't been out shopping.
No need for "buying" when I have so many things in my stash.
I just need to try to work up some inspiration and creativity.

One of my favorite floral combos is hydrangeas and Fall leaves.
Actually, it's hydrangeas and everything!

When I open the front door here,
it's always filled with wonderful northern light.

Last year I used the "oatmeal" tree here on the console for Fall
as I've done in the past, but this year I kept the vase filled
with the leaves and hydrangeas.
It will probably come out in a few weeks for Christmas.

We're finally getting some rain again here and will be in the 50's.
The leaves are never-ending, and the mums and pumpkins
on the porch have taken a real beating.

(early October)

I'm surprised that they've lasted this long into November.
We're starting to have frosts at night and I've been covering them
with towels but before long that will be over.

You may remember how I congratulated myself for coating the pumpkins
with polyurethane so the squirrels wouldn't eat them.
ahhhh yeh.

They started on the mums first, burying acorns.

A particular little guy started eating all the little "warty" things off,
then I found the warty pumpkin on the sidewalk yesterday.
But I think it must have been raccoons
because it was totally scooped and cleaned out and
all the seeds were gone. I don't think a squirrel could have done that.
Besides, the raccoons are nighttime bandits.
Oh well, glad it's almost time for Christmas decor on the porch!!

(Lovely)

Hope you're having a great week!

And hope you'll come by next Monday...

  1. Your Thanksgiving entry is gorgeous Debra! I love the mix of hydrangea and leaves. The bittersweet around the mirror is such a nice touch too. Your squirrels did not do as much damage as my deer! They finished all three pumpkins and then flung them from one end of the porch to the other. Quite the mess! Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family!

    1. thanks Denise, we have deer come thru here too and I'm surprised they have left things alone. They have a path that comes thru our side yard into the back yard so I think they've missed the front porch, haha!

    1. oh these squirrels, they're pesky little messes, but oh so cute. They're pretty brazen around here, they dare you to run them off! xo

  3. Your entry way is award-winning, Debra!!! It looks perfect - and I adore that print. It says it all, doesn't it?

I actually laughed out loud at your poor pumpkin eating to bits. Oh my, what a shocker! And to actually find that squirrel in the act! Ha!!!!

  4. I honestly look forward to your Millet Print...always beautiful. And, I had to laugh at the pumpkin. Before we got a full glass storm door, we had a half glass door. Went to try and go out the front, and it was stuck. I pushed again, and it only moved a bit. So I went out the back and walked around. A Huge RACCOON was sitting with his back to the door and one of our pumpkins in his lap, and feasting. He didn't stop even when I stood at the bottom of the stairs...HO, HO, Ho...lol. We are more built up now around here, and less wildlife, but it was always an experience. Hugs, Sandi

    1. oh that's so funny, Sandi. We are in an old subdivision close to a walking woodsy trail, but really close in town. We have a lot of deer and one night last year our outdoor motion detector went off and there was a momma raccoon and 3 babies scrabbling all over the back porch. I'd put out some berries for the birds and they found them. We laughed our socks off, except it was 2 oclock in the morning! Hope things are good, have a great Thanksgiving! xo

  5. That's really pretty, Debra. I liked the tree last year, but really like the darker take this year. I always took my pumpkins down to the river after using them as decor. I agree it was probably raccoons that gutted yours. I wouldn't even bother coating them. The last thing you want is a DEAD raccoon on your porch some morning!

    1. OK, yes that would be yuckier than a chewed up pumpkin! I do like to offer them up to the critters since apparently they're totally delish!

  6. This is all so beautiful, Debra, you are seriously one of the most creative people I know. I love the way you layer things and how you use such pretty flowers and natural elements too. Super sorry about your pumpkins. We live in a heavily wooded area so I never get to use real pumpkins on the porch. There are way too many mischievous things around :) Hugs, CoCo

  10. Awwww, they must have been really hungry! I could see raccoons going after pumpkins. They'd make a nice dinner. :) Mr. Squirrel looks cute hiding nuts/eating! We have a busy squirrel who comes around 11am each day and eats nuts out of the front yard. He is adorable (to me) and has the bushiest tail!! Love your entryway with the beautiful leaves and dried hydrangeas. I haven't been able to dry any hydrangeas unless I buy cut flowers this time of year and dry them. Texas summers are too brutal although I plan on planting some in the sideyard as we get going here for next year.

Enjoy your pretty blooms and I look forward to your Christmas decorations,
    Barb :)
