Snow Owls on the Mantel

It just wouldn't be October on the Mantel without my little Snow Owls. A few years ago white owls were the latest addition to the Fall Scene, and that reminded me of what a fad owls were in the early 70's. All the poor homely little ceramic owls that had been packed away or sold at garage sales started to make a comeback on the shelves of flea markets and antique malls. They were still homely, but I had a plan...

I wanted to turn them into something elegant, magical, and a little haunting,
so I let my paint brush work like a wand and threw in a little glitter...

Snow Owls!

Here's how they started out...
a little "family" of 70's dated decor.

Then several coats of white ASCP

This little guy was my muse and inspiration.

This pic from a few years ago gives some detail
as to how I did the highlighting with paint and glitter.

So here they are again this year,
after being packed away last year.

I gathered some real and faux pumpkins on the hearth,
along with my Boxwood Topiaries with new brown plaid ribbon.

oh, and be sure to add some Bittersweet!

I'm working on the front porch,
and I have more fun decor to share inside.

I'll be joining in on these great parties:

Hope you're having a great week!
xoxo,

  6. I love your snow owls, and honestly I also like them in their 70's look. I never seemed to find any owl or lambs at thrift stores so does that mean you got there before me? Anyways your mantel looks really pretty. And if you should ever tire of your owls you could send them my way..just saying.

  8. LOVE the owls. And I also love that you painted them. I paint everything, once I feel it needs a little "refresh", so I love this. Beautiful mantle. Always a treat to visit you and see your lovely home, Debra.

  10. Ah yes, I was also in that '70s group of owl enthusiasts, with my macrame wall owl and ceramic umbrella stand my neighbor made as a wedding present. Your brood looks fantastic in that mantel cubby of yours, Debra.

  11. Your mantel looks so elegant and your sweet owls have the perfect little nook to nest in! I love the idea of adding glitter to the finish. My husband's family has a vintage ceramic owl plack with googlie eyes that we wrap up for the newest bride. It's been a fun keepsake!
