Turkey Talk in the Cupboard

When I organized my old cupboard and re-dubbed it my "Holiday Cupboard" in the Garden Room, I knew that Thanksgiving would be a fun display. Vintage turkeys and Brown Transferware plates and platters are really shown off with the white interior and ironstone. My Fall display was the basis and I didn't have to do much to make it be"Thanksgiving".

A few years ago I lived through the monumental Turkey Disaster when for whatever reason a platter and a gaggle of turkeys flew off my kitchen baker's rack. I'm laughing about it now, but it was really sad to see so many of my broken to smithereens vintage turkeys and plates. I tried to salvage the ones you see here but some of them really did suffer scars and cracks.

So if you see some poor fellas with chunks missing you'll know why.

The oval "Give Thanks" plaque is chalk, and even though it's a little bright and gaudy from the 50's or 60's, I still love it and it fits perfectly on the shelf in here. It's all mix and match in here anyway.

Here's a few of the gang...

My fuzzy brain thinks the little turkey candle on the left was gifted me by my sweet friend Linda from Itsy Bits and Pieces a few (many) years ago. He sort of matches the size of the defunct partner of the salt and pepper set.

speaking of Linda, here's her Thanksgiving Cupboard
from several years ago, found on Pinterest.

This pic has always been an inspiration for me
when decorating for Thanksgiving.

Our older daughter can't make it for Thanksgiving so she'll be here this weekend. After her visit I think I'm going to have to get started on Christmas. At least put up a smaller tree for a woodsy look. I know your "Christmas decor" wheels are spinning too. It's certainly cold enough for Christmas right now.

We've hit a wall with our landscape. Our first guys just don't have the chops for this big job, then another guy got started. He got a lot done but he's also flaked. He has problems, big problems, so better off him not doing it. At least the major part of this job is done and the shrubs are in the ground. If we have to wait a bit to get professionals out here I'm willing to wait for them. At least the mountains of dirt and gravel are gone and from the street it looks deceptively "normal".

Hope to see you Monday for...

  1. Hi Debra,
Glad your daughter is coming in this weekend and you will have some time together since she cannot come on Thanksgiving itself. Love your Turkey cabient. So pretty. I started my Christmas because my daughter hosts so I can get a jump on it. Living tiny there was not a lot to do lol! Have a great evening.
    Hugs,
    Kris

  3. Debra,

This cabinet is filled with many pretty pieces. You have a nice collection.

Shame about the landscapers but you're better off getting someone else than not having it right. You don't need issues. As you said, the dirt and gravel are gone.

Enjoy your time with your daughter.

  4. Looks great, Debra. Even though we often buy things chippy and cracked, I can't imagine the horror of seeing a shelf's contents fall off!
Yes, the wheels of the mind are in motion for Christmas, but the hands are frozen, sorta like your landscapers'. Ouch, sorry you have to wait for new landscapers, but glad you got a big chunk out of the way before winter.

  5. Your hutch is so lovely, Debra! I love the plaque. and I have glued and chunky turkeys, too.
Sorry about the landscaping issues. Our electric company dug up much of our yard (after waiting 6 months they showed up on Halloween) to replace a line that goes under our driveway. They finally fixed it and dumped the dirt back in the big holes...leaving big piles of dirt. Another company is supposed to come and grade it out and re-seed or sod, but with this weather and snow it will probably be next spring. So...Looks like it will be next spring before the "for sale" sign goes out there. So exasperating...just trying to go with the flow...

  6. Thanks for sharing your wonderful Thanksgiving cupboard, I so love all those little turkeys...it's hard to find nice ones that are made with decent ceramics. I love the natural touches of feathers and leaves...just what it should all be about this time of year!

  7. I never read about the turkey disaster. It’s sounds terrible. I’m sorry about your landscaping. That’s too bad. I know you are ready to get finished. I’m itching to get things decorated for Christmas.

  8. Debra, I missed this earlier. With my husbands hospital ordeal, most of October and November has simple escaped me. I'm pinning this for inspiration next year. I have a few turkeys and pieces of brown transfer ware that I like to use for fall and Thanksgiving vignettes. Love seein what you have! Thanks for sharing!

  9. Just now saw this. I love your turkey collection. So wonderful. I am glad you have gotten over the big turkey disaster. No reason to cry over spilled turkeys. I bought turkey dishes a couple of years ago and just remembered I've never displayed them. Ugh.... Well there is always next year. Seems I say that every year.
