Love Tokens

I've posted about this wonderful gold locket that was my paternal grandmother's before, but when I was looking back through some February magazine issues I really enjoyed this article in Martha Stewart Living about Love Tokens, and wanted to share it once again.

Lockets of all shapes and sizes were very popular gifts to loved ones in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Often they contained photos, an inscription, and a lock of hair from the beloved. Given when soldiers went to war, engagements, or the birth of a child, lockets and charms were highly valued tokens of personal affection, and worn daily.

I love coming across antique pieces of jewelry, charms, and lockets, and I have several personal pieces that I wear frequently.

This large gold locket was an engagement gift to my grandmother with my grandfather's photo and a lock of his thick gorgeous hair. Her initials are inscribed on the cover, Irma Gertrude Russell.

They were married around 1910, and my daddy was the last of 6 children born to them. I had an uncle born in 1912 (the first) and then she had 4 stillborn babies before my dad was born in 1929. They hadn't expected my daddy to live and so he had very few pieces of clothing as she didn't want to get her hopes up, but there he was; tiny, but healthy; a little miracle.

Just a little L-O-V-E

Not long ago after perusing some old Victoria Magazines, I found a wonderful image again in the February 1999 edition. Victoria never gets old or outdated, they are always lovely and classic. I knew once I saw it that I wanted to put my own "take" on it, so I used what I had on hand; tags and romantic elements to say "LOVE" in a very special Valentine-y way.

Old stamps

vintage buttons

Millinery flowers

faux pearls

I had so much fun putting this together...

I'm joining in for these great parties:

A new linky party, Simply Klassic Sundays

Hope you're off to a wonderful week,

Heart Shaped Happiness

Don't they say the quickest way to a man's heart is through his stomach?
So how about a little heart shaped tummy love...

home made iced sugar cookies...

Le Creuset has some adorable ramekins

I'm thinkin' I need some...

but if you don't have those,
how about some jam filled cookies...

or ice cream sandwiches...

even these will do...

good grief, heart shaped cherry pie...

macaroons...I'm losin' it folks...

I don't know if this is some sort of red velvet,
but I'll take my chances...

and Heart Shaped Marshmallows...

can you tell I did this on an empty stomach?

Just letting you know that

What LOVE is...

Today is Valentines Day, and I just wanted to share with all of you a little reminder that I've been given this week. The true source of Love and what it is.

1 Corinthians 13:4-8,13

Love is patient, love is kind, and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not arrogant, Love does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered, does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails...And now these three things remain; Faith, Hope, and Love.
But the Greatest of these is Love.

Have a blessed day, my dear friends.

love and be loved,
p.s. (I had a whirlwind weekend, and I'm so far behind on emails and visits for Vintage Inspiration Friday. Please forgive me for being the "hostess with the leastest". I apologize. I'll have some news this week.)
