What I Rescued This Weekend, Monday

This is another one of the times I'm showing the "after" photo first, because the "before" photo is pretty icky. This little chair is a good example of Eastlake furniture that I had mentioned last week. Victorian, but more linear. Originally, I'm sure this little chair was part of a set that was most likely mahogany or walnut, probably with a dark velvet upholstery.

At some point it had been painted gold, 70's or 80's I imagine, because it was very chippy. I love the square inset that has carved bees, one on each side. I just did a creamy-white wash over it, so some of the gold still shows through.

This is a child's bedroom dressing screen. It is really old and had been covered with multiple layers of wallpaper, but then badly discolored due to water damage. It had probably been in someone's basement or cellar.

I stripped off the wallpaper and then found I really liked the patina of the wood with it's aged look. It was pretty rough and uneven so I gave the panels a little dry-brushed cream paint to even it all out.

My helper is in the background on the table.

Before shot, showing the gold paint. The upholstery is a new heavy linen,
good quality. I would have done a natural linen, but this will stay, for now.

You can see the details easier of flowers and bees.

And then, this is the scary screen.

After shot, so you didn't forget.
I think they turned out pretty sweet, and I didn't have to put a
tremendous amount of effort into them.
Here are some other items I found. Some old white dishes...
and does anyone know what these little rose paper thingies are?
They are embossed heavy cardboard. I assume they are some sort of pad,
maybe a paper hot pad or pad for an iron? I'm not sure.
Sweet, but I don't know how practical that would be.
Let me know if you know.

I love this little set of white camillia prints with a gold metallic frame,
very 40's. A little purse that has lost it's chain and a button,
but has a "tuxedo" design to it.
And a huge cutwork tablecloth with napkins trimmed in taupe.

I'm trying to keep on the lookout for fall things.
Darker colors. These little decoupaged trays, one in flowers and one in fruit,
are so cozy looking, maybe with a little after dinner sherry or appertif.

This is a little Belgian tapestry, only about 12 inches square.

And a petite print.

Sorry that my bigger finds are all in a dirty garage, but that's where I have to work on things, and it's just easier to leave them there to photograph.
I guess all of us junkers have a spot like that.
We like to call it the "staging area".
My husband had his car in the garage for the first time in a couple of years
and he was just so so happy, but then I found a few bigger pieces
that I had to paint, so now he's outside again.
I do have a goal to get things organized and out,
so maybe he can be back in by winter.
Ahem... OK, maybe sooner.
Be sure and say Hi to Polly over at Sassafras Stuff
and check out all her finds from this last week.

What I Rescued this Weekend, Monday

It's not that I don't like garage sales, it's just that I don't have much luck with them. I can be gone all morning and come home with a few pitiful finds. So I've just never been that "into" them. Jan can go and then come home with a truckload of quilts, ironstone and fabulous stuff, Me? not so much. But, this last weekend I did good. My sister had one, and of course I got to shop early. Yeah. She had some great stuff.
This cute little chair is embossed, but is pretty lightweight. It won't stand up to the "teenage boy" test. AND if you need a potty, I have a real winner. It's Alfred Meakin stamped with England and is in excellent condition. I'm thinking a cute little ivy peaking out would just be so quaint.

This was my car when I got home. FULL.

My sister makes great flower arrangements and this was a summer bundle
she did a few years ago. It hangs on the door with or without a basket.

The little wooden tray with a 40's fruit decal and the green picnic basket are evidence of my love of "cottage" goods. I love all the whites and creams and shabby, but I just can't resist a pop of that cottage vibe.

I rescued the little baker's rack from my own garage.
It looked too "new", so I gave it a "rust" finish, now it works.

I love wire "anything", so I can just see this filled with gourds, pumpkins and bittersweet for fall. BTW, Fall is my favorite time of year, so don't be surprised when September 1 rolls around and all my fall goodies come out. Can't help it, the cooler weather always invigorates me, and I seem to come alive.

This little dresser was in my nephew's room until last week, when he traded his bunk beds in for "grown up" furniture.
It's a little rough on top, but I haven't decided yet what to do with it. White, black or just be lazy and let someone else do the work.
(drawer pull is in one of the drawers)

This little French fashion print is just so sweet. The frame has a little damage,
but a once over with some gold "Rub n' buff" and it works.

Here are some old linens that are not perfect, but oh-so- sweet.
Tea towels, pillowcases and table runners.

detail on the tea towels

There were several "cocktail" aprons from the 50's, that were so hilarious...all tulle, net, and organdy. No help with dirty hands or spills...
just for the chic hostess factor!

This little vintage Battenburg lace number is one I kept for myself,
or I should say for "Irma".

She's wearing it now, as she holds the vintage jewelry that I make.
This is some of my stash.

Be sure and check out more "What I rescued this Weekend, Monday" at Sassafras Stuff.
Thanks,Polly

Well, I'm off to the garage to work on pricing.
Where's my Big Gulp cup, and please turn on the fan!

Have a great Monday,
Debra
P.S. If this post turns out weird, it's because sometimes I think that Blogger has a mind of it's own and it will do whatever it darn well wants. No matter how many times you go back and try to fix it. Double spaces and deletes photos. So I'm warning you, it was one of those days. Sheesh.

What I Rescued This Weekend (Monday)

Polly, over at "Sassafras Stuff", thought it would be fun to show all our weekend rescues and finds on Mondays. So check out her blog for her weekend steals, and deals.

Since I downsized my booth space I haven't been junkin' as much as I used to, but I can still manage to find a few things without having to do a lot of work.

I love old suitcases. I have a bunch that I stack and use at my house. They are on top of armoirs, under tables, stacked on an old kitchen cabinet, under stairways, used as end tables...you know, everywhere...These are usually in pretty good shape, and I have painted some white, some black. I really love 'em, but sometimes its hard to pass up an old junker. I think these make great display props. I have an old beat up black one that has holes in it that I used last year for Halloween and it was great. Didn't sell, but I didn't care. Anyhoo, I found this one and nabbed it. It has the old movie advertisement for "The Shepherd of the Hills", starring John Wayne. Being from the Ozarks, where the true story took place, it's just right up my alley so to speak.

Here are some sewing machine drawers that are in really good shape. I'm going to leave them as they are. Love these for office or sewing supplies.

This cute little pink and white stripe hat box is so "girlie".

And then this great chippy plant stand,
but I think I will put plates on it, then maybe a small ivy.

I love this old cottagy blue chippy chair.
It has great patina.

These are the things I found this weekend.
I love to incorporate all the odds and ends into the displays.
For me, this is one of the best parts of this business.
The creative result of such random items;
how you can put a bunch of pieces together and have such fun doing it.

Have a Great Monday!
Debra
