Birds in the Late Spring Holiday Cupboard

May has always been Bird Month for me. Around here we have nest building, new babies, and new faces at the feeders. I've collected a bit of bird themed vintage items during my time as a vintage market dealer, picking up figurines, tins, illustrations and ephemera during the years. It's a perfect themed match for my other favorite vintage theme which is old garden goods.

I love using that theme for vignettes and centerpieces this time of the year. Of course nests are also a fun theme along with the birds for seed boxes and vintage prints. And since I love to create a theme in the Holiday Cupboard in the Garden Room, it's a perfect time and place to mix it up with anything bird related, dishes, pottery, and any spring decor.

In early April I changed out the green transferware dishes for my French Faience Pottery that are covered with spring and summer color. I have a few pieces of the green transferware and Ivy dishes stacked, and a wonderful "Berry Basket" platter/tray from Fitz and Floyd hiding behind the tureen and "Natural History" book.

A small painted white cigar box is holding a vintage print, Enesco figurine, small ironstone pitchers, and a few green transferware dessert plates. Below, another box with old clay pots and teacups. A Lefton "flycatcher" figurine with a discarded finch nest sit out front.

This "May" not be an actual "May" postcard, but I love the charming and quaint English cottage theme, which seems like spring.

Last week I put together a super easy seed packet garland for the Holiday Cupboard.

  6. Oh my goodness, I love that vintage bluebird vase, as well as all the vignettes in the cupboard. I was lucky this past week and scored an old, oval framed print of bluebirds at an estate sale. I may foster it a while. 😉It's been such a busy week (mostly in the garden again) that I still have my loot in the car, just pushed it forward so I could get mulch, plants and dirt loaded in the rear end! (and that's why I'm so late catching up with my friends' blog posts!). Have a good Memorial weekend, in case I get lost in the garden again.

  9. I recall my grandfather bird watching when I was a little girl, he always seemed so fascinated with what they were doing. At the time, I didn't understand it, but as I have gotten older, I can certainly understand the simplicity of bird watching, and actually enjoy it. I only have a few pieces, but I keep my eye out for new items all of the time. You have some lovely birds in your cupboard Debra.
