Christmas Copper On the Hearth

Happy, happy day after Thanksgiving, friends! I hope you all had a wonderful day Thursday (and this weekend) with family and friends. Some of us still have family here so we're enjoying a bit of shopping, resting, and eating leftovers. How about you. Are you itching to get on with Christmas decorating?

You may remember that for late Fall and Thanksgiving I decided to gather up some of my copper stash and incorporate it into Thanksgiving vignettes and displays. I usually just display my mish mash copper pieces during Fall, but since I was enjoying it so much I thought I'd try keeping it out and making it work for Christmas too. You can read that post HERE.

I primarily was using it on the Baker's Rack and then added a few pieces of copper to what I was doing in the Holiday Cupboard, but I had one big piece that I haven't shared in years (if ever). It's always been downstairs holding books or magazines and blankets, usually on the basement fireplace hearth. Out of sight out of mind...

BUT, no time like the present to try something a little "new" with the Hearth Room decor; specifically on the hearth itself. We brought up this old copper "boiler" to give it a try for a Christmas display. I think these were used to do laundry, by adding boiling hot water with the soap and give it all a good soak and scrubbing, while sitting on top of the wood stove.

At first I just filled it with faux greenery but it needed something extra and a bit sassy, so along came my old paper mache goose decoy to liven things up a bit. I have two decoys; one is heavy molded plastic and is newer, this is really old and fragile and made of paper. Speaking of geese, we have daily visits from our neighborhood friends. Sometimes 2 or 4, other days around 30.

This year she's wearing a grain sack red stripe ribbon with a few sprigs of real holly and berries tucked in.

I've been able to accomplish quite a bit of Christmas decor, but still a ton left I'd like to do. I have a wonderful framed piece of grain sack I'm excited to share with you that's sitting on the mantel right now, but it can wait a day or two. I was excited to get started with all the fun Christmas "Decking of the Halls" and thought I'd start with Miss Gosling here.

You might remember my other goosey dressed up for Christmas

  1. I love the copper boiler for the goose! Every time I put my goose out for Christmas, I feel like he needs a roost. Yours is perfect! (wonder if I can talk my Panoply sister in Cincy out of hers??) Happy decorating!

  6. Debra, I love how you used the copper boiler! We actually have my husband's grandmother's boiler from the early 1900s. I have never polished ours, and always wanted to keep the antique patina but after seeing yours I think I'll give it a try! Just a beautiful vignette with the pretty goose :)
