Scottish Tartan Throws for Decorating

Hello friends, how's your mid-February going? Warm... cold... a little of both? Since it's still February and currently 40 degrees today, I guess technically it's okay if I share a little something in the warm/snuggly/cuddly category. I'm talking about Tartan wool throws and blankets. I have several that are vintage, that I use for Thanksgiving and Christmastime decor. I just love anything Tartan plaid and I'm a teensy bit obsessed with all things Burberry or resembling that particular plaid.

My most used piece of clothing of all time is my Burberry cashmere scarf that I received for my Birthday about a decade ago. During the winter months I seem to wear it with most everything. I'm a neutral clothing person, so it works with black, gray, brown, camel, denim... most of my clothing choices. As you can see, I'm wearing it in my bio photo on the sidebar.

Anyhoo, I was looking through some Scottish blanket websites and found that there was a Tartan plaid that was extremely close to the traditional signature Burberry plaid. Since it seems that any and everything has quadrupled in price the last few years, buying an "original" throw was not going to happen. But, whatever I purchased needed to be authentic "quality".

This plaid has a slightly darker background in camel, instead of the slightly lighter camel of the original Burberry, otherwise it's very comparable. I shopped around and located this Thom(p)son Tartan plaid from an authentic Scottish shop. They have a wonderful selection of Tartans at a "fraction of a fraction" of the cost.

The blanket arrived all the way from Scotland in about a week! Right now I'm using it on my slipcovered oversized chair in the Hearth Room. I have it with one of my vintage down ticking pillows made by my husband's grandmother; a gift for our wedding. Plaid and ticking; one of my favorite combos.

Before I settled on the Hearth Room, I styled it on my guest bedroom queen sized bed. I know I haven't shared the bedrooms in this house, but here are a few pics. The bedrooms aren't large, but they are certainly cozy. We painted them with Smokey Taupe from Benjamin Moore; the same paint as from our previous home. Since these rooms don't have as much light as our previous home and lower ceilings, the paint appears to be more brown than gray. I love this color even though it's slightly different here.

The furniture is between 25 and 40 years old, but solid. It may not be the most stylish or current, but one of those things that won't be replaced. You know, some pieces of furniture are priorities; others are not.

Back to the throw... I think a woolen blanket added to a spread, quilt, or duvet can make a very handsome bedding ensemble. We have white wooden slat shades on the windows, but they're hard to see with all the light.

One of the armoires is here, housing the television.
This was one of the first pieces of furniture that we purchased
as a young married couple.

Another dated piece of the traditional set. It seems we have mix and match bedroom sets. The 4 poster bed that came with this dresser and chest of drawers ended up at a relative's home. I use this room as a "dressing room" of sorts, with much of my clothing stored in here. I'll share our Master Bedroom at some point. It looks very similar except with a newer version of similar furniture, but with a less ornate king size sleigh bed.

Speaking of Burberry, I've used their signature perfume for years.
(A bit of plaid on the antique vanity mirror, above)

Also hard to see, but the handmade "anniversary" quilt was sewn by my mother-in-law about 25 years ago. It's such an heirloom, and I cherish it. I'm still using my PB bedding from years ago and 2 custom toile Euro shams. The little floral needlepoint is a flea find and I have stacked men's hat boxes on the dresser. I'm not one for "frilly" in the bedroom. The one time I bought a floral Ralph Lauren set my husband said, no thanks.

I love the English Country look...

Have a great weekend friends!

  2. The bed is just beautiful! And I love the tartan plaid taking the "feminine" out of the bedding. Those shams and the little pillow add so much to this vignette. The wall color is great, wish I could convince my husband to paint our room in that shade of taupe. Very pretty.

    1. Thankyou, Janice. I'm just a taupe kind of person. I love a gray/beige/brown paint and we ended up painting every room of this house. It's a good neutral for most decor. Thanks for coming by to visit!

  5. I can't believe you got an item from Scotland in a week! That's amazing! I think you made the perfect choice by leaving the throw on your oversized chair. It looks darling. I really love your slipcover. I need one for a beautiful chair we got handed down from my mother-in-law. It's in perfect condition, but it's red so it doesn't match my decor. Do you know where you got it? Hope to have you come share on Crafty Creators & Happiness is Homemade link parties over at LifeasaLEOWife.com!

    1. Hi Niky, thanks so very much. The slipcovers came when I ordered the sofa and chair. They were from Sam's Club link online. I'm pretty sure the brand is Klaussner. But if you do an online search you will probably find them in several websites. They're really good quality heavy cotton. I hope you can find something that works.

It's relaxed but refined all at the sane time which is what I love. I have that perfume as well. Lol. Have a great day- XO- MaryJo

  11. Fabulous post! Love anything Scottish and the Thomson tartan is so lovely. I have ordred a couple of throws from Scotland too and also picked up a handmade wool plaid throw in England (Highland Tweeds, Scotland) on our trip to England years ago. Love the cozy bedrooms and all the traditional cottage inspo!
