Nature's Neutrals for a Winter Farmtable

One trend I've seen in the bloggyworld this last few weeks is that so many of us are leaning into January and winter weather using nature's cue with more neutral colors. Whatever our basic "style" might be, doing it in neutral colors, is a clean feeling way to start the new year.

As I mentioned before, for me Christmas brings an overload of color, especially red. And once all the Christmas decor is tucked away I need a few weeks of easy on the eyes, quiet colors. I had my red Tartan plaid tablecloth under the burlap runner and totally loved it. But after Christmas I wanted to use something different.

A few years ago I found a wonderful piece of French fabric that had at one time been a curtain panel. It is a heavy linen that had several hand sewn repairs but folded with those in mind, it works well out here on the farm table for a new look with neutrals.

I'm back using my wooden vintage ice cream bucket and a fly fishing creel here on the table. The bucket is filled with faux autumn hydrangeas and faux winter evergreen branches. I had an antique fishing creel that I'd found at one time and the little leather packet had been attached to it. The old creel literally fell apart, but I salvaged the fly envelope which helps the new one look a little more authentic.

It's filled with a real variegated potted ivy.

But the non-minimalist in me needed to add a vintage Currier and Ives print.

And how about a tall birch column candle alongside
on a base with an antler...?

Hmmmm. maybe needs something else.
A berry basket with small evergreen tree?

I guess some people can think up a vignette in their head
and get it accomplished the first time, but I'm one of those peeps
who needs to tweak and adjust and play with ideas and objects.

Things need to be interesting from all angles out here.

As you can see the tall birch candle didn't make the cut and ended up here on the "little white desk". Oh, and for a little something extra, one of my old cardboard suitcases made it's way upstairs for a base of the vignette. (Can you even imagine how long a "cardboard" suitcase would last now with airport luggage handlers). I shudder to think of it...

I love these old suitcases, but this one is in terrible shape.
The small neutral "man check" grabbed me though.
Disposable suitcases... who knew?

Did you catch my last post?

I have a lot more to share out here in the Garden Room
with the January neutrals from nature.
It's supposed to start snowing today,
and the bird feeders are full.

Have a great weekend!

We hope you'll come by on Monday evenings for the party.

  9. This is stunning. I've never thought about pairing any of those old pieces together but they totally work!! The mixes of textures and heights is so impressive. Being a fly fisher myself, I LOVE that fly fishing basket. What a neat way of using it. I'm so impressed by this...thanks so much for sharing!
