Cupboards and Cabinets in Decor

Hello Friends,
I'm so glad you're here, because today I'm joining a great group of bloggers as we share our love for all things vintage with the Lifestyle of Love Blog Hop, hosted by our wonderful friend Cindy from County Road 407. We were given the topic of "How we use Cabinets and Hutches in our decor". Well, let me tell you I was jumping for joy when I saw that I would get to share one of my favorite pieces of furniture.

Yes, you guessed it.
The Holiday Cupboard!

If you're coming from visiting Michelle over at her place
Welcome, so glad you came by to visit and are following the Hop.
Michelle is styling her hutch for summer, so if you missed getting by
I hope you'll take a minute and check out the Hop participants before me.

My love for cabinets and hutches comes from my equal love
 of decorating the shelves inside.
The only thing better than an old pie safe or cabinet
is having those doors wide open and getting to see all the
wonderful dishes and vintage pieces displayed.

I've bought and sold antiques and vintage pieces for years, but back in 2006 my husband and I got into the retail end of things with a few flea and antique mall spaces. I love "smalls" and have always loved to create vignettes with them in my vintage pieces. Having cabinets that were for sale made it easier to display goods, and then to change things up for holidays and seasons. So that's where it all comes from and I've carried that over to my home since I'm no longer selling, I just get to keep things freshened up here at home.

Instead of sharing all the cabinets and hutches I've used throughout the years, I thought I'd focus on this old pie safe that's had several "lives" with me. At our previous home I had it in the basement basically for storage. Before that it had been in my studio/office holding supplies. When we moved to this house, I was thrilled to be able to use it out in the sunroom/Garden Room and then found it to be the perfect place to display dishes, ironstone, and seasonal vintage pieces.

No matter the holiday or season, it's always fun to decorate
in and around this wonderful old piece of furniture.
Pie Safes, Pie Cupoards, Pie Cabintets were popular back in the 1800's
as a kitchen cabinet that stored breads, pies, and food stuffs before
the "ice box" was introduced into the average family home.

The Garden Room is filled with antique and vintage pieces in whites and neutrals.
Keeping the furniture in neutrals creates a wonderful background that welcomes
all the natural color from each season and holiday.

The Holiday Cupboard is in the sunroom along with a bunch of other white and chippy vintage pieces. I have a few wicker seating pieces, an old baker's rack, an Eastlake library table and other odds and ends that I really enjoy dressing up for whatever holiday or season comes around. Quilts, pillows, florals, prints and random vintage ephemera get changed up according to seasonal color, not only in the room as a whole, but also inside the cabinet. It's the place that my vintage dishes, ironstone, and transferware mingle with bits and pieces of holiday and seasonal goods.

My Daddy made me the little coffee table/bench before he passed
back in 1999. I've used it in many different spots,
and it's just the right size to put together a few fun vignettes.

No matter the season or holiday
it's always my first spot to decorate.

Here are a few other cabinets around the house.
This is another pie safe that was from my husband's great grandmother's kitchen.
It had been stripped and refinished before I received it
so I painted it antique white to better match my decor.
I use it in my office for art and office supplies.

Here's the "Cookbook Nook" in the Hearth Room,
which was a cabinet I used to display items at one of my
flea market spaces, but came home to live with me when I closed shop.
This little "Frankenstein" cabinet is just the right height to keep
a changing seasonal vignette on top.

This china cupboard is in the Garden Room
along with the matching farm table.
I love to decorate "on top" but keeping a simple antique
basket here is perfect for this setting.

  3. Debra, when we first started collecting antique furniture way back in the 1960's we found a kitchen cupboard just like yours. I absolutely loved it and it was the best of the finds then in my opinion. We used it in our home for a long time and then we sold it. Still kicking myself. I love how your's looks for any occasion. It is always so pretty..Happy Mother's Day..xxoJudy
