Painted Breadboard

Have you ever done a little project and then at the end
realize it needs a little more oomph?
That's what happened with this bread/cutting board paint update

Back in late January on a quick trip south of here to Branson for a doctor's appointment we stopped at a great new vintage market called 417 Market and Supply. I picked up a few fun pieces and one of them was this cutting/bread board. It was locally made and I searched through several of them to find  just "the right one". When I got it home and stacked with my other vintage and current cutting boards it just didn't blend in. The unpainted "before" board had a lot of variation in wood grain, so I realized I would probably need to paint it. I thought I'd taken a "before" picture of it, but after searching through all my photos I couldn't find one.

It's taken me awhile to get around to painting it, but I started out with a couple of coats of ASCP in Old White and that took care of the immediate problem. Plain white was much better than the original board which was too variegated in wood grain.

I wandered through Pinterest looking for painted bread/cutting boards and found a few.
This one from Carlene from Organized Clutter who is so talented and creative,
 was an inspiration piece.

I wondered if by painting it that I might have ruined it's ability to be used for food.
But I think that using a piece of parchment paper as a base will work.

"Grungy" white finish painted on a customer's old breadboard.

This was the counter display of cutting boards here in my kitchen with the board being plain white. The "before" board before painting wasn't very pleasing to the eye. The coat of white paint helped a lot.

And here it is with the taupe grain sack stripe.
A little more pizazz, but still blends in with the other pieces.

In the Garden Room I found a little more light...

I know there are a lot of old breadboards and cutting boards floating around flea and vintage markets, most of which we would never actually use because of sanitary considerations. Some of mine have a lot of stains that look a little "iffy". I think a coat of paint could help many of them. So don't be afraid to paint one or two to actually use. I finished it off with a coat of spray matte sealer. Now that I've painted one board,  I'll be looking out for others that may not be looking great, but that can be painted and then used for kitchen duty and decor.

Hope you're having a great week,
and that you're enjoying your start of Summer.

Hope to see you Monday evening

  1. Hi Debra,
What is it about cutting boards. I love them too. I love to pile them up against each other too. The new one is fabulous. Happy Thursday.

    1. I know, I love them, they each have their own little personalities. I accidentally gave some of mine away when we moved...ouch!

  2. My pig board is painted in chalkboard paint with the French word for pig on it in chalk. I smile when it catches my eye.

  3. Love the new look Debra! My hubby doesn't get spending money on a old bread for display so old ones I would pay a fortune for won't be in our house.

I have been spending time catching up with the Rachel posts. There are so many, and really interesting. I think it will take me a while too! Loved your visit!

  9. Hi! What kind of paint did you use? And is it safe to cut on after you paint it?

    1. Hello, I just used chalk paint as a base and then a mix of chalk paint and craft paint with a sealer sprayed on. I wouldn't put food directly on the board itself, but maybe with some parchment paper to us for a small charcuterie. I guess it's more for looks, not to cut or prepare food.
