Spirit of Christmas Past: Entry in White

Hi Friends, I'm really missing not being able to decorate for Christmas this year. I didn't get to decorate for Fall either, but I knew that wouldn't happen from the minute we signed papers on the new house. But... I had hopes that we'd maybe be moved in by the end of November. As we started working at the new place more and more projects that needed to be done came to our attention, so now it's December and we are still working. At this point I'm hoping to move at the first of the year. I'm not complaining because I want things accomplished before we get there. So I'm doing a little reminiscing.

Each evening I get my Christmas decorating fix from visiting you all and Pinterest. I ran into several of my pins so I thought I'd just share some posts from Christmas's Past. These are some pics from last year's Entry Hall and Dining Room. I use a lot of Tartan Plaid for Christmas, and it usually creeps into the Entry, but last year I focused on "white".

In the past I've planted 100's of Paperwhite bulbs in a variety of vintage vessels, from early November to late Spring. Since moving to our current home, I've been a little short on space, so finding lifelike faux Paperwhites has been an easy switch. I love fresh flowers and greenery, but with 3 nosey kitties it's best for me to go faux.

Sheep seemed to be the theme of the Entry last year, and this little guy is indeed a Sheep candle. He was a Christmas gift several years ago from our kids from Anthropologie.

Changing up the Seasonal and Holiday themes here on the Entry Console also means featuring an old print. I've collected small prints, graphics and paintings during my years as a Vintage goods dealer, so sticking with the sheep, I painted out the way-too-gold frame of one of my favorite prints, "The Shortening Winter's Day" by Joseph Farquharson. A little mix of ASCP and taupe latex made the paint change a quick and easy fix.

A galvanized metal conservatory frame holds a metal sheep elevated on some old books.

Immediately to the left is our Dining Area. I like to layer table linens and runners, so for Christmas that usually means one layer will be Red Tartan Plaid.

I made the Holly Topiaries years ago, and they fit perfectly into my Guy Wolff Pottery vases. Several years ago, during their after Christmas Sale I found two sizes of Pottery Barn white wooden lanterns. They were such a good price I bought 2 of each size. The smaller ones stay on my mantel throughout the year.

When it comes to decorating, I'm a big ribbon fan. I married a red plaid ribbon to the Vintage Font Burlap ribbon (same as the Paperwhite Urn) on the lantern.

A Royal Kensington teapot fits into the traditional Plaid theme on the table.

One of my smaller Ironstone covered vegetable tureens
is filled with a few vintage Christmas ornaments.

Last year I wanted to do something a little different on the sideboard. I usually keep several large glass cloches here, but I wanted a gold and white theme of mercury glass votive candleholders. I also used two new mini lanterns on old books to complete the vintage look.

My husband surprised me one year for our anniversary with this sheep painting.
It's one of my very favorite art pieces.

Vintage gold and silver ornaments decorate an old Ironstone scalloped platter.

More faux Paperwhites with live Ivies here on the vintage wire plant stand.

  1. Such a beautiful home you have Debra. I love all your arrangements and the faux is a good idea with critters around. We always had a cat that thought plants were for de-planting. She once actually carried rocks away I had used to cover dirt. They were all by back door---so have fun with your kitties and lovely home. Meowy Christmas..couldn't resist, Sandi

  5. Debra, isn't it nice to visit "old friends" from your collections? I enjoyed this and hope it gives you comfort while you muddle through the chores of nesting. I really adore both of your sheep prints. I said I was doing less decorating this year, but the earlier I started, the earlier I finished, and I keep piddling. I love Christmas like you do. I also like that quiet space beside your chair. That small tree on the stand with lamp by the window is a nice vignette. Have good weekend.
