Cottage ReView: Thanksgiving with Feathered Friends

Hello Friends, Here we go into the slide toward the holidays, so during the next few weeks I'll be sharing some inspiration for Thanksgiving and Christmas as I make the transition from Fall to Christmas.

Seasonal and Holiday Hops are some of the best sources of ideas and inspiration for what's ahead. So today I'm sharing a gathering from two years ago. It's packed with great ideas for Thanksgiving and late fall. I'll be sharing some late fall to Christmas ideas too this next few weeks. This is my favorite time of year as we move into the cooler part of fall and ready ourselves and homes for Christmas.

We're sharing our Feathered Friends that help us decorate and celebrate this wonderful season of Gratitude and Thanksgiving. Turkeys are the star of the show, but we're also including pheasants, grouse, quail and ducks; any wild bird that appears this late Fall time of year. I have a small cast of characters that migrate around the house and show up in different places and vignettes each year. 

These pics are from last year in the Garden Room where most of the wildlife congregates. I have a small collection of vintage turkey salt and pepper shakers and planters that I really enjoy displaying in small vignettes during the Thanksgiving Season.

Each year they make an appearance in a different spot. But what's so fun about the small vintage turkeys is that they are easily tucked into crates, trays, baskets and cupboard shelves to add that special little holiday touch.

Here's one now hiding out in the fall foliage in an old crate

on the farm table in the Garden Room.

This big guy used to be really colorful, but as I gravitated to a more neutral decor palette,  I realized he needed a paint makeover. So now he coordinates with other pieces a little better.

I've had him for many years and he shows up with all his friends.

Another favorite spot is the Holiday Cupboard. If you know me well, you know I love to decorate this old pie safe for all the seasons and holidays. Thanksgiving is such a fun time as all the vintage pieces congregate.

Brown transferware and ironstone are the staples of the fall and Thanksgiving displays in the cupboard.

The Garden Room always reflects the colors of the season, 

and now is layered in browns, golds, and the deep hues of nature.

My little homemade bench/coffee table is a great spot 

for a few vignettes celebrating Fall. 

This medium size white ironstone Turkey covered vegetable tureen

usually finds a spot here. It's not vintage but perfect for a crate or tray display.

My collection of wool plaid throws and blankets come out in November to cozy up the sitting area.

The fellow below is my oldest (new) turkey 

as I made him back in the ceramic craze of the 80's.

I've had this baker's rack since the early 90's, and it's always been a fun place to decorate for each holiday. It was also the spot of "the Great Turkey Disaster" of 2014. We had just moved to our previous home and I had a Thanksgiving display in the kitchen sitting area. I hadn't secured the turkey platter well, so it all came crashing down late one evening. A few of my flock bit the dust. (literally smashed to smitherines ) I was able to salvage a few, but they're a little worse for wear.

I have the baker's rack out here in the Garden Room at this house.

And it's constantly changing as the calendar does.

I made several homemade seed boxes back in 2013. I'm using one of them here for a Thanksgiving vignette, and of course a couple of little vintage turkeys had to join in.

Last year I created a Thanksgiving mantel with old vintage and antique frames. Of course a few pheasants, quail and turkeys showed up along with some vintage Thanksgiving postcards.

Back in 2013 I put together a fun nature themed 

Thanksgiving tablescape, in our then (2 houses ago) home.

Here are a few pics with a centerpiece created with natural elements,

and a sweet little quail showcased in the window box.
