Vintage Christmas Ornament Boxes

From the very first vintage ornament I saw many years, I fell in love. With the tarnished, chipped, and worn metallic finishes especially of Shiny Brite ornaments, they reflected my love for timeworn beauty.  I started out with every color I could find, then began to focus on the metal colors of silver, white, and gold.

Soon I was drawn to not only the ornaments themselves but the fun cardboard packaging with vintage graphics they had been lovingly nestled in year after year.

After 60 or 70 years most of the packaging has been torn, smashed, and crumpled as they were packed and unpacked each year. I've tried to restore a few of the ones that I've found. The fact that the packaging itself is still around is a testimony to how we lovingly pack away each Christmas bauble with care.

Usually I just stack a few of the better preserved boxes for a quick add on display, but this year I thought I'd bring most of them out and incorporate them in a grouping here on the old farmhouse desk. Seeing them all together makes a statement.

As you can see above where the reindeer is perched, many of the thin cellophane "windows" in the packaging was missing and shredded. I just removed it carefully and re-taped the cardboard packaging as best I could.

Above is one of my little vintage elf ornaments that I found on my many flea market adventures. He's made of pipe cleaners like so many ornaments from the early to mid 1900's.

One of my larger reindeer is keeping watch over the display. He was a gift from my sis several years ago. His grass covering looks amazingly like fur dusted with snow and frost. My little felt gingerbread friend comes out each year to bring a smile to everyone's face.

I love using the old metal garden gate as a backdrop throughout the seasons here behind the desk. So many vignettes and displays on this desk are garden related, it always adds some vintage goodness to this spot.

This red frosted bottle brush wreath is probably from the 50's. It's seen much better days, but it's always fun to put this up each year.

Be sure to come back on Saturday as our Lifestyle of Love Vintage Hop Group will be sharing our Christmas collections. I'll be sharing more ornaments and fun Christmas vintage items.

  3. I so enjoyed the vintage boxes. What a great idea. You have a part of beautiful history. It's true they don't make many things like they used to. These are an example. I too love boxes that things come in and my girls have always picked at me, but never have I kept those beauties. Love them...Dolly

  7. I loved seeing your vintage treasures. Several of the boxes reminded me of the same ones I had in the early 70's! The older I get, the more I treasure old stuff!

  11. Love the vintage boxes and vignette. To give boxes support, I cut cardboard and glue inside to avoid crushing.

  12. Hi Debra - As an antiques dealer, I have had customers ask if they can buy vintage Shiny Brite boxes even if there are no ornaments in them! Your post clearly shows us how charming the graphic designs are on these boxes. Thank you for linking up with the Home Imagined Link Party.
