Elegant Glitter Snow Owls DIY

As the calendar goes, it's a little late in the season to be sharing Fall DIY projects, but I was ready to post my Late October Entry where I'm using my pretty little Glitter Snow Owls. So before I shared my current October Entry, I wanted to post again how my little Glitter Owls came to be.

Here are the "before" guys about 9 years ago.

These pics are from a post in 2012 when I found my "inspiration" owl and then decided I'd try to replicate the look on larger flea market specimens mostly from the 70's and 80's. I remember when I was a newlywed, owls were the trendy rage. Everything, and I DO mean everything was owls, owls, and more owls. That trend lasted for several years, and I collected quite a few, but sadly over the years, they (as most trendy themes do) ended up in garage sales, broken, or in a box in the attic.

The first pic were a few little guys that I found over a couple of trips to flea markets, and as you can see they're very in your face 70's decor. So first step was a couple of coats of chalk paint in white. I had to do several coats to completely obliterate the browns. Actually, they're not that bad, but they all needed to have the white look for it to work. I added a gray wash in craft paint to their eyes and faces and some "detail" work with their eyes and beaks. Then I finished them off with a clear spray sealer and a dusting of glitter.

Here's my inspiration fella.

Here's another post from 2015 that was from our last home
when I decorated in October. Snow Owls on the Mantel

I use them each year in October, and hadn't shared the process for several years. This is a great time of year to find these ceramic owls at flea and vintage markets, so maybe this year is the one to locate them and get them ready for next year. They are a pretty and elegant way to decorate for Halloween or just late Fall in general. A few years ago they started using owls in decor for Christmas too, so that's another idea.

These two pics are from my October mantels at our previous home.

I'll be sharing the October Entry next week,
so I hope you'll come back to see them in all their white glittery glory!

  4. Just beautiful, Debra. They went from just plain old owls to something elegant and wonderful. I have passed up a lot of pretties at thrift stores just because of their color and never think about what a treasure they could become with just a can of paint..Happy Weekend..xxoJudy

  7. Debra, you are always so clever! These owls are so charming with your snowy makeover! I'm an owl lover, but don't have a group of owl per say. I do have my MC owls and a few in the Halloween bins. I was a Chi Omega in college, so
owls are definitely a part of my life. They are fascinating birds!
