Scenes from the Late October Dining Room

Hi Friends, I need to share the rest of my Dining Room,
before it's time to change things up for Thanksgiving...

For me, decorating is a "process". Even the seasonal decorating. I have certain pieces I like to use and keep them as a basic part of the landscape. The large metal Italian basket is one of those basic pieces on the Dining Room table. The basket is big and makes a statement. The heavy chairs are also big, so whatever is on the table has to be bigger. It's also easy to add and subtract floral elements to keep the basket seasonal.

Now in October, I've added colorful preserved leaves and smaller white and gray pumpkins to the hydrangeas and ivy that are usually the base for the arrangement. I filled up an ironstone tureen with faux pears in late Summer and they've just stayed. I've loved that harvest gold and green with my make-shift tablerunner for Fall. I'll be changing out the tablerunner to a darker piece this next week as a base for Thanksgiving. By the end of October I'm ready for some darker, more textured linens.

One of my white wooden trays landed here too, and it's been a place
to show off my tapestry pumpkins that I bought last year.
These little pumpkin guys are hard to snag, but worth the effort.

This metal vintage-look postcard holder is a lot of fun,
and easily adds some graphic seasonal ephemera.
Which means I really love old postcards, but they're not always easy to display.

Even though I have a neutral base for decor, as in walls and furniture,
I really need those seasonal pops of color.
I can use the orange in the Fall and try not to overdose on it.

This little candy bowl compote is (I think) from the 30's.
Love the black highlights around the rim.

This sweet little collectible British teapot depicts
Caernarfon Castle which is where they filmed Downton Abbey.
It's tomato-y red color makes it work for Fall and Christmas both.

Old books are always a good way to elevate a piece.

I wanted to do something a little different this Fall on the buffet,
so I went back to a favorite look with a pumpkin on an urn.
Maybe not real original, but a classic look I love.

I tend to clutter things up, so I'm working hard at editing my pieces.
You can see a decorative plate and my squirrel were holdouts
in the photo below.

Hope to see you Monday evening for...

  2. Hi, Debra. I always love your arrangements, you add natural features and choose so carefully your colors that are natural to the flowers. You have such a beautiful home, it always takes a bit to LIVE IN in your new home. Hugs and have a lovely Fall season, Sandi

  3. This is lovely Debra. So many great layers and details. Love the ephemera postcards and how you displayed them since you're right they are tricky to display sometimes. The teapot is adorable and pumpkin in an urn is a classic I absolutely love! Love this season, as I know you do too!

  5. All your vignettes are lovely, Debra, but I'm particularly drawn to your dining room table. Vignettes there can be tricky since they can be viewed from all sides, but your use of colors, textures, patterns, elevations ensures the vignette can be appreciated from each vantage point. I love the 'makeshift' runner. (Why makeshift?)

  11. Debra,

Your dining room is stunning! II love white pumpkins but the tapestry pumpkins are beautiful. I wonder if I will ever be able to find one. That's it just one.

  12. Beautiful!!! I love your table and sideboard. Mr. Squirrel is adorable and needs to stay visiting... I actually like the cluttered look. My vignettes are often too light on goodies and part of it is lack of decorating areas, at present. (I need a bigger dining room again!).

    Happy fall to you, Debra,
    Barb :)
