Easy July 4th Decorating

OK, back to life on the blog...

I've mentioned many times how having a neutral background, meaning walls and furniture, takes me a long way on being able to easily decorate for holidays and seasons. When we bought this house one of the first things I did was start looking for a white slipcovered sofa set. I'm sure the day will come when they aren't "the trend", but for me, being able to change up decor has been a great decision.

I love vintage quilts and I'm definitely a personally obsessed pillow hoarder,
so it's easy to turn this room into a reflection of whatever is on the calendar.

You don't have to have a lot of July 4th decor or memorabilia,
just get together some color coordinated pieces to set a patriotic stage.

The easiest way to decorate for the 4th is to add some small and large flags.
If you have some vintage flags, all the better.
The flags I have have all been found at flea or vintage markets and
none of them are current "in service" flags.

One of the few pieces that I can say is actually patriotic, other than flags,
is this little commemorative insurance plate from Alma, Michigan, 1919

This oil painting canvas with a hay wagon and horses,
makes me think of late summer on the farm.

I have old flags draped over the back of the sofa and chair
to add that color for Independence Day.

A simple bouquet of faux daisies with flags in one of my old watering cans
makes an easy centerpiece or vignette grouping.

The Toile pillows spend a lot of time here in the Hearth Room along with several indigo ticking pillows. I consider ticking a neutral staple of pillows because they go with most every other pattern and design. The bed size ticking is perfect for any napping or relaxing that happens in here.

For a little drama this year I draped one of the vintage flags
over a very old laundry basket on top of the TV armoire.

I love to use this old red/white quilt at Christmas and for July 4th decor.
The pattern is called "Churn Dash" and I found it at a shop
about 12 years ago. It was one of those purchases I had to think about,
but one that I've used so many times.

I always need to apologize for the light in this room,
since it has no windows or direct sunlight.
If I open the front door it gets some great light from the Entry,
but since it's in the middle of the house it's normally "cozy".

The room behind the French doors is my office
and some day I'll take some pics and share it with you.
It tends to be constantly messy...

A little different light in here which came from a couple
of lamps with new "daylight" bulbs.

I hope you have some fun this weekend, if it's only with your immediate family.
I'm hoping to get out of the house and routine with Hubby.
Take care and stay safe.
Please wear those masks.

  1. Beautiful! I love all the flags and touches of red but I think my favorite is the flag up on top of the armoire. So pretty! Have a Happy 4th and stay safe!

  2. Really love your impact of the red quilt. Sometimes the hard purchases makes us just shake our head and wonder why we hesitated. I've only put up flags over my tiny kitchen. Very limited space in my 750 square foot apartment!

  3. I absolutely love your patriotic touches! Have a wonderful weekend sweet friend!

  4. I love your sweet family room all done up for the 4th. Everytime I see that pretty armoire I swoon. I love the basket above and the flag draped. So festive and beautiful. I cannot believe it is the 4th of July this coming weekend either. Summer is flying by. Have a great rest of the week and wonderful holiday. xoxo Kris

  5. Love your room with the red, white and blue - quilts, flags and all. Happy 4th of July! Stay well and safe~

  6. We'll be staying home. You hearth room looks very festive. That plate is a darling. I can't wait to see the office.

  7. Debra, your room is just beautiful and if you look at my rooms you wouldn't think that I would agree with you but I do. Having a neutral background makes for all kinds of possibilities and especially red, white and blue. I really love it and when I see a room like yours it makes me start to rethink it all, but then there would be all that work!! Your decor certainly makes it look worth it..Stay well..xxoJudy

  8. Debra,
    Absolutely lovely!
I adore the flag draped atop the tv armoire!
The "Churn Dash" quilt is such a striking pattern!
I, too, put out my "star" quilt for the Fourth of July Holiday.
(I tend to get chilled in the air conditioning, so I use my quilt often.)
Not much Fourth of July decor here this year, but I did fill vases with small flags!
Thank you for sharing your lovely home!

  9. It looks beautiful in red, white and blue. I love the quilt and the flag on top of the cabinet. The little plate heart goes pitter patter!

  10. I agree on the white furniture -- it makes it so much easier to switch things up when the spirit moves us! Love how you decorate for the 4th with understated decor items that fit seamlessly together. I love that plate! Hope you had a relaxing holiday. Thanks for sharing at Vintage Charm! xo Kathleen

  11. Sometimes less is more. I love what you're doing with just a little.

  12. Such wonderful patriotic decor Debra. The draped flag looks fabulous. The floral arrangements, the quilt all look so welcoming and perfect for the 4th. I am happy to feature your wonderful 4th of July decorating at Love Your Creativity.

  13. Exactly my thoughts on neutral room decorating. A white backdrop makes it so easy! Love this room and the patriotic touches you added. That red and white quilt stole my heart!
