A Few Ways to Transition a Dining Room to Fall

No matter the season, I usually start the change-ups in the Dining Room. That's probably because I get an idea for a tablescape or something new to do on top of the DR table, and that kind of gives me a theme and direction. This year I pulled out a new piece of gorgeous Fall looking fabric that I bought last year but never ended up using.

It has the "perfect gray" background and is filled with Hydrangeas, florals and assorted leaves that brings Autumn to mind. It's filled with golds, creams, and a sort of soft coral mix with a hint of a dusky mossy green.

I've been keeping the large scrolly metal basket on the table during most of my seasonal decorating, and it's usually filled with Hydrangeas. This time of year I like to add in the Sunflowers, and then as it moves into Fall I add the pumpkins and Fallish leaves.

I've said it before, but Hydrangeas are my go-to flower no matter what the season as they pair well with most other flowers. In Spring I have blooms that are cream to green and some with pinks, then in summer I go with the lighter and more dusty colors, then in Fall the deeper greens touched with golds and browns.

Several weeks ago I had my gray chalk paint mix out so I painted out one of my old beat up small watering cans. It was misshapen on the bottom since it had been sitting outside at some point and water had frozen inside causing the bottom to bulge out. I took a hammer to it and pounded it back down, hoping it wouldn't split the metal and it held. It's still a little wobbly, but at least it's usable... good enough to hold a little Sunflower bouquet on the French Wagon.

Up until this week I'd had a Summery Bee-skep sitting on the wagon, but I received an order I'd made from Grandinroad with some Fall things and when I opened up the box with some adorable little moss covered pumpkins they just had to stay on the wagon. After all, pumpkins are growing in the fields right now, and starting to be harvested, so I'm not going to apologize for my little green moss pumpkins jumping into the wagon. If you're unhappy you can now look away... I'm getting ready to decorate for the Fall Open House Tours, so since I can't decorate the house all on September 1st, I'm going to do things on my easier schedule.

If you can't stand it, you can pretend they are moss covered tomatoes...
but they will be pumpkins again in a couple of weeks.

I've seen several versions of hand-made moss covered pumpkins, so I'd like to try that in a few weeks to see what I can come up with for a few bigger ones.

So, try a floral arrangement with Hydrangeas and Sunflowers, find a Fall toned or darker tablerunner, and grab some Late Summer/Early Fall fruit and veggies for a "still life" in a basket, ironstone bowl or dough bowl. Then all you have to do is add in a few Fall leaves and pumpkins to move you easily into the new Season.

Here are a couple of pics and posts from the last two Fall Seasons.

2017

How do you all start to transition into a new Season?
do you do it in one day, or take it little by little?

Oh, I've been working on my mantel too.
It's going to be full of tomatoes.

  4. I agree with Sweet Violets above...It's only too late, never too soon for fall to start! My table is covered with a drop cloth and paint pots waiting for my next "victim" of chalk paint so I'll have to pretend I live in your pretty, well decorated house! I love the painted watering can, but can we add just a little dark wax in the edges to age it down just a little? With those wonderful mossy pumpkins surrounding it, it does seem it would get just a little musty doesn't it? LOL

    1. Hey Sugar, glad you mentioned the watering can look. I distressed it a little but it doesn't show up in the pics. I've hesitated about "aging" it cause I loved the color in that pale gray/mushroom hue. But I decided to give it a try with a little Fruitwood stain. It did change the color, but it does now look it's age. OLD, ha ha.

    1. Hey Brenda, I found that at a fabric outlet here in town, so it's probably several years "old" since it was first introduced. It's Waverly called Floral Flourish. I bet you could find it online somewhere.

  11. Those are great little moss pumpkins! I like starting fall decorating with a softer color like that. That floral runner has a fab look too. Your vignettes are always so cheery!
