Vintage Inspiration Friday #21: Legendary Luggage

There's just something about
the feel and look of old leather luggage.
The patina and wear bring exotic places to mind.

Who has carried it?
Where were they going?
Romance or business?
Ingenue or seasoned traveler?

A tourist in France...

or on African safari...

vintage luggage holds a fascination for me;
it's an inspiration.

iconic trunks of a bygone era

In the cargo hold of a transatlantic liner,

...or in a sleeper car on a European Express.

...think Hercule Poirot and Agatha Christie

What treasures of lace and linen...
furs and jewels,
did they contain?

personalized...
monogrammed with identification
for the worldwide traveler

lasting a lifetime and beyond.

repurposed for everyday living

A French trademark

I've admired these for years
... and thanks to my sweet husband;
I was blessed with a little vintage inspiration just for me.

Now to share some fun from last week...

"Share the Joy" Holiday Party

Bella Dreams is having a Party!

A "Share the Joy" Holiday
Decorating and Craft Blog Party!

The party is an all inclusive fabulous fun trip
 of anything Christmas!
So be sure and head on over after your visit.
Names of participants are on the left side bar.

Last fall I shared my "Holiday Cupboard"
that is in my family room downstairs.
I rescued it from my flea market space a few years ago.
It holds whatever the season brings
 in kitch and cottage-y fun.

Vintage white pottery vases of all kinds are my staple.
Although, for this Christmas, many of them have had to
find temporary homes elsewhere in the house.

Putz houses, paper and chalk churches, old candy tins,
and nativity lambs all live together in perfect harmony!

This is one of my favorites,
 a "Sees" candy promotional sleigh.

And look who's driving...
a flying squirrel, in goggles, no less!

Tiny top shelf for paper houses.

Plaid tray with dog

Nativity set lambs.
Oh, you know I just love these little babies!

And vintage children's Christmas picture books.

A Stack of painted white suitcases tops it all off.

Christmas is such a wonderful time of year.
 I've decorated with new eyes
and a fresh perspective this year,
and it has been such fun!

Love to each of you,
and the best of Christmas wishes!
Debra

p.s. I'm a little behind in visiting everyone,
I hope to catch up with all of you this weekend!

More White Wednesday, White Suitcases

Thanks everyone, that left a comment on my blog for this last White Wednesday post. I had a lot of interest in the suitcases that I had painted white, sitting on top of my cupboard. Who knew?... I guess that I have had at least one original thought! But really, I had seen another one "whitewashed". I took my time with these because I wanted the leather trim and brass fittings and clasps to remain original, not painted over. And I really preferred complete coverage of the paint. I wanted them to look like they were made "white".

I just used plain satin interior wall paint in an off white. I do think I used some stain as a glaze on one of them to give it a more antiqued finish. I did them three separate occasions. I was asked if I had used primer. No I didn't, but I probably should have. It took me several coats. I used a brush and a roller on the larger areas, but I used a small art brush to do the edging work which was somewhat tedious. I just loved how they turned out, and each one being different, really shows up the character and the leather trim.

Lee at Inspired Comblogulations said she saw some just like these at the Ralph Lauren Store in Dallas. That's cool to know, I'd love to see how they displayed them. Now that I've heard how much you have liked them, I'm going to do a few more. I have a bunch of really tired ones hanging around. I know they'd like to be prettier!

OK, get out your paintbrushes and have fun.
I'd love to see what you all come up with!
