Woodsy Transferware and Tartan Christmas Tablescape

Hello my dear Friends!  Before Thanksgiving I shared some pics from years ago when I put together a tablescape in fall colors using Brown Transferware with a base of a Scottish Tartan wool throw. I had so much fun creating that tablescape and then gave some pics of other Harvest tablescapes using plaid and transferware. You can read that post in a link at the end of this post.

After that I thought I might try putting together a similar tablescape using Tartans in Christmas colors and a Christmas theme. I'm in awe of all the wonderful talent out here in blogland of tablescape designers who are so creative and come up with fabulous themed tables.

I wanted to use elements that I had on hand, so I started with a Tartan Plaid tablecloth that I've had and used for several years. I fold my tablecloths in two, lengthwise, for more of a table runner look.

I bought this Red/Green quilted table runner probably back in the late 80's. It's handmade and I found it at a small antique boutique. I've gone through stages of using it. Since it's basically "Country/Primitive" it didn't exactly work with my shabby/white/Frenchy phase, but this year it felt right, as there is a lot of traditional Christmas color around blogland.

I wanted to mix and match transferware and plaids, so I'm using several different pieces in my plate stack. I love all things Tartan, as my maternal grandmother was Scottish and from the Cameron family. Below is the Cameron Tartan.

I'm using two different red transferware patterns on top. Old Britain Castles from Johnson Bros England (above) and Mason's Vista below.

Next up is a Pottery Barn salad plate in a White Stewart adaptation, that I bought several years ago. They came in a set of 4. I just checked and they have several plaid patterns available this year.

The dinner plate is Myott's Bouquet of which I have a set of 8 dinner plates. I could have used a red transferware, but I wanted a contrast of white with the dinner plate and to have a bit of brown in the mix.

For a centerpiece I'm using the Lennox Log Cabin Balsam Lane Cookie Jar and salt and pepper on a large wood slice. I bought the cookie jar last year at Dillard's and keep it out all winter in my Cookbook Cupboard. I found the wood slice at Antique Farmhouse earlier this year.

Antique postcards stand on antique metal flower frogs at each place setting. Each one depicts a Christmas wooded scene.

I found the large antique linen grain sack French tea towels about 10 years ago. They are monogrammed, but monograms don't keep me from buying and enjoying things. I'm using them as a placemat of sorts, but could also be used as an additional lap napkin. Depends on how messy we are! Personally, I can't be trusted with fabric napkins because of red lipstick!!

Plaid pillow covers from Amazon are on the pillows for each chair.

This farmtable is in our casual dining area in the Garden Room. We don't use it daily but it's where we hang out when the kids are here.

Two tall faux cedar topiaries wrapped in burlap flank the cookie jar.

The water/tea goblets are newish from Libby I think.
One of the Martha Stewart line.

  1. Love the tablescape, Debra. The plate stack makes a really pretty combination and is a classic look of yours I love. The centerpiece rounds it all out and makes a really nice, authentic-looking country French village scene.

  4. Oh my golly! I want to hang out in the garden room with you and chat about everything on your table! The French grain sack tea towels, the fun patterns on the layered plates, the oh-so-cute cookie jar... It's all so fun. I've never in my life purchased a cookie jar. Even when my kids were little. Now I need one or two along with some vintage flower frogs! Merry Christmas. :)

    1. well Girlfriend, get on your sleigh and head on up! Think of the fun we could have!! And the cookie jar?... that lid is so heavy it would take a grown up to lift it off. Better to deter cookie thieves!
