The Holiday Cupboard Dressed for Fall

This week I'm doing some decor tweaking for Thanksgiving and gathering some ideas for Christmas, so I thought I'd share a few pics of the Holiday Cupboard dressed up for late October. I like to try to create something new each season here. Last year I put together a few shabby frenchy pieces and created "Romancing the October Holiday Cupboard", and two years before, the post "October Whimsy in the Holiday Cupboard". The first year here in 2019, I had finally organized the old piesafe and it became The Holiday Cupboard 2.0.

I always use my brown transferware during the Fall months. Of all the colors, brown is my favorite, and the variety that I have the most of. It works all year long, but it's just made for celebrating the magical colors of Autumn.

In this post I was using my Brown Transferware mix and match pieces along with a couple of ironstone tureens and platters for a backdrop. I added in a few vintage "chippy/shabby" pieces for a bit of a romantic feminine feel. I used antique candleholder sets, vintage prints, metal flower frogs with postcards and a few vintage feminine pieces. Below is a beautiful handmade millinery rose made from hand stamped fabric and a vintage rhinestone brooch.

A pair of vintage celluloid cherub candleholders.

A small floral creamer in autumnal colors
that my husband found for me.

A small Victorian look bust of a young girl in chalkware.

... a celluloid postcard/print of Anne Hathaway's cottage
in Stratford-on-Avon.

I wish this delicate figural porcelain vase had a marking,
but I know it's a very old Art Nouveau piece.

This brown with pink floral transferware patterned platter is another piece my husband found for me in his flea market shopping.

Of course I have to add in a few paper mache pumpkins and gourds
to plop in the sugar and creamer.

This pair of old tole candlesticks were once electrified from my mom's stash.

A Raphael Tuck vintage postcard from English Cathedrals.

Vintage framed Frenchy prints from the 1960's.

For me, the key to putting together shelves or a display
is to use not only themed pieces,
but hues that most often reflects the natural seasonal color.
But most of all, I like to have fun and be creative.

We used to be able to find wild Bittersweet at garden centers or out in the wayside but not for the last several years. So this dried piece was from several years ago that I had saved. Unfortunately it had to go away last year because the poisonous berries were falling off, and the kitty girls couldn't leave them alone.

Here's a look at the 2020 October Whimsy in the Holiday Cupboard.

In this whimsical look I was going with the traditional orange and black color combo for late October that I really love.  As I've said before my grandmother's Birthday was on Halloween and we always made a big to-do when I was younger so some of those childhood memories still remains embedded in my fall experience.

You all know I love black kitties,
so I've collected a few of them along the way.
I have more, but I didn't want this look to be all about the black cats.

Sorry some of these are a bit blurry,
that's what happens to me in low light.

...two Caliente orange cup and saucers from the 30's
and a carnival glass candy dish
with USA Pottery bits and pieces.

Vintage Reed's Butterscotch Wafer Tin

You all may remember me talking about the crow family that has adopted us, so we now have a group of noisy, annoying, "murder" of crows hanging about. I don't really like crows, but they hate the hawks and will run them off. So better a few crows than a nasty hawk looking for dinner among my birds and chipmunks. Speaking of chipmunks I have 2 new groups of babies.

I think these are butterscotch candy tins.

Back in 2019, the first year we lived here, I finally got around to organizing the old pie safe and put together a fall design which was the first rendition of the Holiday Cupboard here at this house.

This was one of the pieces of furniture that I painted hoping that I would be able to use again. It had been in my office at 3 houses ago, then in the kitchen at the lease house, and hidden in the basement in the last house. It hung in there and now, yay, it gets to be front and center again!

I'm a tchotchke collector, at least I used to be until I ran out of space, but since I love squirrels and chipmunks so much I would grab any little figurine that I might find on my flea market trips. Salt and pepper shakers are a fun vintage item to collect.

The little Chipmunk on the Stump is Fitz and Floyd.
The stump is the salt shaker and the chipmunk is the pepper.

I wanted to mix my Ironstone pitcher and creamer collection, with a few brown transferware Aesthetic pieces and then some fall tins, books, a few candles, and an old needlepoint piece of birds that contains the color palette of Autumn.

Remember Crabtree and Evelyn biscuit tins?
I have a few and love this dark and moody Rembrandt-esq with fruit.

If you've been with me for the long haul (13 years now) you might remember I used to have a "Holiday Cupboard" in my lower level sitting room. I had so much fun bringing together seasonal displays using books and pottery with all things vintage. This pie safe turned out to be a much better version... and now with a better camera and lighting!

I hope you've enjoyed seeing my late October versions of the Holiday Cupboard from these last few years. I know this was a long post, so thanks for taking the time to revisit them. I had a couple of little "decor" paint projects that I'm finishing up today. Hope you're having a wonderful Fall weekend!

  5. All three of these versions offer something special. I like how you layer your 'tchotchkes" and make everything work together so beautifully. The stacked butterscotch tins with a bit of fall foliage really spoke to me!

  7. They're all so pretty Debra! I especially loved how you used the flower frog to hold your postcard. I'm envisioning using small ones for place card holders on a garden themed table! Thanks for the great inspiration, and hope you have a lovey week!
