September Mantel with Ironstone and Transferware

Does decorating for Fall sound better once it becomes September? I think there is a subtle shift in my brain's ability to bring out some pumpkins and leaves once we're officially past Labor Day. I've had my Fall tubs out for several weeks, but I just couldn't get excited until this last week. Plus the weather has cooled down a bit and the light seems to be making those longer shadows that don't happen till Autumn is on our doorstep.

I've been playing around with the mantel in the Hearth Room this last several weeks, wanting a change but not sure which direction to go. I knew I wanted to use some brown transferware, but I only have the two brown pitchers. So I improvised a bit and used two of my vintage ironstone pitchers to balance it all out.

sorry for the light in here, it's either blinding or dark as a cave...

I like to use pears in early Fall, and I love their French Country vibe, so for now there are pears here on the mantel. There will probably be pumpkins showing up really soon, though. Funny how you don't notice things that glare at you until you take the pics and edit them. That being how ragged the dried hydrangeas are in the pitchers. I didn't have blooms on my bushes this year due to the fact we pruned them last Fall. So these dried hydrangeas are older, and scragglier.

I'm using one of my favorite canvas prints that I put together years ago. It looks better when the bright lights aren't highlighting the fact that it wasn't fitting the canvas. You can read that original post HERE.
And a Spring Entry using this same canvas HERE.

That's one of the things that I love about this print, is that it works year round.

Here's the mantel from August. I had the topiaries up there so I added the pitchers, but then decided that I needed to use the small white lanterns instead. That sort of tweaking happens all the time around here. I start out with something, then change it up so much it becomes something else entirely.

Have the pumpkins arrived at your place?

Hope you'll come by the link party on Monday evenings.

  1. Good Morning Debra. I love your mantel with putting the transfer ware up there. I always loved that sheep picture too. Looks great on the mirror. So pretty. Have a great day today. xoxo Kris

  4. Lovely, Debra! Your pears are perfect, and so is your painting - really evocative and makes me feel like I'm out in a fall field enjoying the last of the warm days! I'm inspired to do more with our mantel now. :) Thanks!

  5. Love your mantel with the pears, dried hydrangeas, and sheep canvas. I have not brought the pumpkins out yet, but do need to switch out one (or more) tray that's holding other late summer items. But today I shall rest. Yesterday was a long day in the landscape garden, and today I am paying for that.

  7. Debra, the brown transfer ware and pears motif is a perfect nod to fall. I've recently been thinking of adding touches of autumn to our mantel. We keep a scale up there, so I often fill it with seasonal things. I like to use my velvet pumpkins and some faux golden pears. You have me inspired to get the change made. Thanks!

  8. I ADORE your transferware pitchers, Debra!! SO pretty and they look amazing with the pears! What a neat idea to use pears first before pumpkins!!

  9. The addition of color to your neutral mantel with the pears is perfect Debra. Organic, natural and just beautiful!

  10. Love your hydrangeas, I do not think they look scraggly at all. Mine did not bloom this year either. I never know which ones bloom on old wood and new wood... I am a mess of a gardener anyway, they either make it on their own, or shrivel up because my black thumb is pretty big.
