Feeling Fruity on the Baker's Rack

August is the month I think about the harvest in the garden from when I was growing up. And memories of a farmstand at the edge of town with fresh corn, cucumbers, tomatoes, and watermelons... all sorts of produce fresh from the fields. Often there was still a little dirt still hanging around. So thinking about the summer fruit harvest this month, the Baker's Rack is all about Summer Fruit  ...

I brought out all the vintage pieces with a fruit motif and gathered them here in the Garden Room. It's a bright and colorful display with reds and golds in abundance.

On the top shelf is a handpainted piece from the 90's of Ancora Italian Pottery. It's a pitcher that I always enjoy bringing out in Summer. On the right side of the shelf is a blue "windmill" salt glazed piece of crockery that was my paternal grandmother's.

The wooden "seed" box has a vintage fruit basket piece of wall decor made of chalkware probably from the 30's and a small "grape" teapot. I love finding vintage advertising pamphlets and have a few of them here. I think this one is from the 70's. They usually have interesting recipes and colorful photos.

Two vintage pieces of crockery are on the left and a vintage birdhouse with a red roof. Need a little red in late summer.

My maternal grandmother's Hull Apple stove set always shows up in the summertime.

Since I was using a fruit theme, I brought out 2 appliqued tea towels with apples, strawberries and peaches. I just love tea towels and always leave one or two out for the season. They were a staple in the kitchen before dishwashers. Any of you remember drying dishes by hand? I know that dates me, but growing up in an old farmhouse, I didn't use a dishwasher until after I was married at our second house.

My paper mache very old goose decoy is nesting here on the bottom shelf. It's usually out for Christmas, but somehow managed to hide out here in the basket.

This old red/white metal flour cannister is holding one of my ivy plants. I'd love to have the complete set, but I've only seen one other piece and it was terribly scratched. This one will have to do.

Here's another post of the late Summer Sitting Room and Baker's Rack from our last house.

I hope your August is off to a good start. We're finally getting a little rain and back down to the upper 90's, so it's sort of tolerable at this point. Are you winding up your summer plans?

We hope you'll come by the link party on Monday evenings.

  4. Everything looks great. I am in the process of THINKING (haha) about redoing my kitchen. Mine will be a tad more then displaying stuff since I want to paint the cabinets, change the counter top, install a dishwasher and build a cabinet for it and lay floor. Been thinking about it and still thinking cause I dread getting into it.

  5. Love seeing your changes every month (I am guilt of same). In late July early August I go vintage beach but will soon go to Back to School with a mix of sunflowers and apples in more formal areas. Your fruit design reminds me of a few more things I can add. Thanks!

  7. Rooty tootie, fresh and fruity! So many adorable pieces. One day when you're bored, you could try handpainting a Charles Chip can similar to the flour cannister? I think that would be fun. Thanks for always linking up at Farmhouse Friday too. Love all of your posts!

    1. Hi there, sure! The bigger jar is the cookie jar, and the two smaller are salt and pepper's. The medium one... is the "grease" jar, where you put your fried chicken or pork or bacon drippings so you could make gravy with it. kind of yucky, I know, but I remember my grandmother doing that and she always had the most amazing gravy. I haven't made gravy like that in 40 years. Gravy used to be a staple at our house growing up.

  10. This just makes me smile! So cheery and I always love looking at the detail you put in to all your displays. Beautiful! (I still do most of my dishes by hand. Old habits and all. There's nothing I hate more than unloading the dishwasher!) Thanks for sharing!
