Vintage Cottage Weekend

Hello Everyone, welcome to the first
Vintage Cottage Weekend!

Amber from Follow the Yellow Brick Home and I thought it would be fun to start a weekend tandem post where we celebrate our love for all things Vintage Cottage. We both have our roots in buying and selling vintage and antique goods in vintage shops and markets, AND we both love English Cottage and French Cottage decor. We want to share some of our ideas, inspiration, and thoughts on all things Vintage Cottage Style. Today I thought I'd kick off our new weekend get-together with some inspiration from a cottage staple.

You all know I LOVE any kind of vintage cupboards...
So I thought it would be fun to do a little celebrating the Irish way
and share some decor inspiration with an iconic kitchen staple
...the Irish Cupboard.

These photos are from the March 2014 edition of British Country Living.

The photos weren't available on line so I took a couple of snaps
to share this wonderful example of a British Cupboard.

This is another example of a gorgeous cupboard from
Carolyn Westbrook's Kitchen in her book Carolyn Westbrook Home.

I've been a fan of these amazing cupboards forever;
the perfect display piece for an Irish/English/Welsh/Scottish cottage
...but you DO need a good size space for this size of cupboard.

Similar decorative cutouts with these two cupboards.

One of my favorite bloggers; Jacqueline from Cabin and Cottage
shares her cupboard decorated for Christmas.

I'm really just swooning over this white cupboard below...

The usual distinguishing mark is that they are a "Step-back" Cupboard.
meaning the top Hutch is not as deep as the bottom Dresser.
This gives more room for larger serving pieces to be set out.

Amazing Emma Bridgewater Pottery...
Notice the common element of hanging mugs and cups from the shelves.

What a wonderful place to display pottery and Majolica

How about some Irish China to set a lovely
Holiday table?

Just the bottom dresser in stripped pine.

More Emma Bridgewater Pottery.

A few French and Belgian pieces of Enamelware in Green.

Irish Beleek Pottery

speaking of Green

LOVE this, you can tell this is not just decor,
but a functional piece of counter space.

Another plus to this type of cupboard is that it can be used in almost any decor style. English and French Country Cupboards are usually a little more detailed and curved, while Irish Cupboards are usually less ornate with more straight lines.

French Cupboards
one identifying mark are the curved lines and legs.

I'm not claiming to be an expert on English and French Country furniture,
just having some fun and sharing some wonderful pieces
for inspiration and oogling!

Happy St. Patrick's Week!

I also wanted to share a few fun DIY ideas and St. Patrick's Day decor.

I totally love this classy boxwood wreath
with a subtle nod to St. Patrick's Day.

  1. Debra, this is a wonderful idea! You've collected a nice assortment of inspiration photos here. This will be a great resource! One of the first things we purchased for the home we bought in 1995 and continue to live in, is an Irish pine glass front cupboard. It's a step back with a dresser below and the shelves above have glass front doors. I keep French faience pieces and a few other special pieces on the shelves. Below in the dresser below is where I store my MacKenzie-Childs dishes that we use for meals. It is huge and takes up one wall of our kitchen sitting area. With limited cabinet space in our 1930s kitchen, it is a much needed asset! Kudos to you and Amber for this fun new series.

    1. thanks so much Sarah, I'm going to have to go back thru your posts in search of your cupboard. I'd love to have one, but would have to sell things here to find a spot for it. Oh well, a girl can dream huh?!

  4. So many fun cupboards! A few were a little too cluttered for me (and I am a big fan of clutter, so that was kind of a shock!) but most I really loved! It's also a reminder that it's time to spring up mine!

  6. I literally laughed out loud when I read Amber's comment! It's true. I love a good cupboard even though I've never purchased one because we lack the room. And those sweet little pitchers with the clovers on them... I would love to pass one of those on to my daughter for her March 17th birthday. Maybe one day. Loving both of your posts and really looking forward to seeing all the vintage goodness. Big hugs.

    1. Hey Cindy, so glad you came by. Tell your daughter "Happy Birthday" I imagine she's had fun being an "Irish" baby. When we were growing up you had to wear some green on SPD or you could be pinched. Not fun if you forgot!!

  9. Debra,
What a great idea to showcase all of those cupboards. That white one is amazing and those green pieces are incredible. Yikes! I have not room in this house for a cupboard like that these days. I will drool over yours.
    Hugs,
    Bev
