St. Patrick's Day in the Holiday Cupboard

Here in the lower Midwest, March is coming in like a lamb, and what a wonderful way to start my birthday month. We have a week of upper 60's and low 70's. It won't last of course, but it's a lovely, optimistic way to bring on thoughts of Spring. I'm just hoping that buds won't pop out and then we have a freezing spree.

I consider Valentine's Day a "winter" holiday, but once the calendar
changes to March, I consider all things to be "Spring"!

When we have a seasonal change or a holiday coming up, one of the first things I think of is giving the Holiday Cupboard a refresh. Spring and March usually have me bringing out the green transferware, my ivy pottery, and a few pieces of my French faience. I like to have a "color" theme seasonally, as well as a holiday theme. Green works for St. Patrick's Day and Easter, and is a perfect backdrop for anything spring related.

I don't think I've ever shared this old cottage print, and it may have been an early version of a hot pad or coaster type product.  Not sure, as it does have a hanger attached to the back. Whatever it is, it's old and marked Knapp and Co. New York. The Internet says they were printers of ephemera, prints, and postcards etc. You know I love anything "cottage", and this scene with sheep could very well be Ireland, or some European village.

I have it sitting behind one of my dark green transferware vegetable tureens.
A little green birdie on moss, tweets you a Happy St. Patrick's Day!

I have a few antique post cards for St. Patrick's Day and Irish greetings,
that are displayed alongside the dishes.

The cream and sugar are "Romantic England" from J.G. Meakin.

I always love using a few of my cottage pieces
when I put together a dish display.

I'm also using a few pieces of my green depression glass.
This sugar and creamer, a few salt and peppers, and sugar shakers.
I'd never heard of a "sugar shaker" but my grandmother had one
(whoops, didn't get a pic of it this year!)
that she kept a cinnamon/sugar mix for cookies, toast and custard.
Also a little kitchen measuring cup.
Here's a pic from last year of the sugar shaker.

Not sure about this teensy sacred print...
anyone know what this might depict?

The decorative cottage plate below is from Belgium.

The above green transferware is "Kent" by Enoch Wedgewood,
 which was discontinued in 1965.

Are you doing a little decorating for St. Patrick's Day?
I think I have a little Irish in me, but it would be waaaaayyy back.
My family on my mom's side is German and Scottish.
My dad's side was mostly of French descent.
But on March 17th I'm a little bit Irish...

Vintage Cottage Weekend

This weekend my blogging pal, Amber, from Follow the Yellow Brick Home, and I are going to start a new weekend tandem post where we celebrate our love of all things "cottage". We both tend to gravitate toward English and French country cottage style, so each week (hopefully) we're going to share some of our past posts, cottage inspiration topics, and fresh new ways we're decorating with vintage cottage elements. I'll be sharing a link and photo of what Amber is up to, and she'll be sharing mine. We hope you'll come by on Saturday mornings for a little fun and romance; cottage style.

Please come by on Monday evenings for the Link Party!

  2. Happy Birthday Month, Debra! Your green touches are definitely signaling spring. It's sunny and mild here so I've been gardening. Much to do after a harsh winter once again. Two years running, it has taken a toll on the garden. Some things were just beginning to recover, and a recent ice storm took them out again. Happy March!

  10. I so enjoy seeing how you style your cupboard. My favorite treasures of yours is the Belgium plate followed by the hot pad print! My evolving style seems to be cottage! My last name used to be O'Malley and I kept the appreciation of all things Irish. I'm Scots-Irish/Polish, my kids are 1/2 Irish and I used to wonder WHY they were stubborn--I mean persistent! I have a section of living room wall covered with different forms of Irish blessings which I love to find.
