How I've Used Architectural Pieces in Vintage Decor

Hello Friends, I'm so glad you're here today because I know you'll have a great time visiting through the Lifestyle of Love Hop as we all share our ideas for using Vintage and Antique Architectural Pieces in our decor. Our good friend, Cindy from County Road 407 is hosting and we have a fun group that's sharing our ideas today. If you're coming from the Hop and Michelle's at The Painted Hinge... Happy Saturday, I'm so glad you're here!

I think that most of us who love vintage and decorating with antiques and vintage pieces love to incorporate some kind of architectural and old furniture pieces into our homes and properties. When I started blogging back in 2009 I was coming from a background of buying and selling in vintage market places and flea markets. I had access to a lot of old stashes of buildings and junk piles where I could almost always put my hands on some kind of one-of-a-kind pieces of old homes, businesses and churches. We all used old building pieces to customize our shop spaces and selling sites. Nothing got me more excited than finding a shop space that was filled with old windows, front porch trusses, or antique cabinetry.

At this current house of ours I've had to sell several pieces of old decor that I just didn't have a space for. A few years ago when we knew we were moving, I started "downsizing" my stash and with that went a few pieces that I really loved but just weren't practical for this place. Although I did get to finally get ahold of an old front porch column that my mom had had but couldn't use anymore. It's not a big piece so it fit perfectly in the corner of the Hearth Room and I really have enjoyed seeing it there. It manages to conceal a gas line to the fireplace and add a little interest.

You can read that post here...

I've had several windows throughout the years and they've been fun to decorate with.
This post was from 2 houses ago...

At the same house I used this wonderful vertical paned window
to display a grouping of college botanical pieces.

And then brought it out in the Dining Room at our last house.

I guess you can't really call them "architectural pieces",
but pieces of old furniture have always been fun to incorporate into my decor.
During the early days of my blogging I collected several wonderful pieces
that I used over doorways to beef up lackluster woodwork.

At the same house I used this in the Entry to make a bit more of a statement.
Right now I'm using this same piece on the window above our bed
in the master bedroom. Our midcentury white painted woodwork
needs a bit of a boost, so it has a bit more oomph with this piece.

This is another one of my favorite pieces, and I have it sitting out in the garage right now. Our ceilings aren't high at this house, so I'm not sure where I can use it, but it's still on my list of things to do. Oh how I love those scallops.

I found this wonderful tabletop conservatory years ago,
and loved decorating it for the holidays.
But when we were downsizing I knew it was time to let this piece go,
since it took up a lot of space.

I admit that my favorite piece is an old door that I found
years ago. I kept it in the sunroom at our previous house
then moved it into the Kitchen Sitting area later.
It was perfect for a seasonal wreath or door decor.

When we moved to this house the old door sat in the garage for several months. I was determined not to let it go, but wasn't really sure how I could make use of it. It finally made it's way to the back porch where I'm still using it behind some shelving on the potting Bench.

Another fun piece that I use over and over is this old

  5. Debra,
The history your wall could tell with your fabulous collection of pieces. That conservatory is fabulous! I also love the French door frames.

  6. I love that scalloped piece over your (old) door too. Can you imagine what the entire house looked like with that on it? So adorable! As I was reading your post I though oh gosh, I'm not sure we can downsize if that means giving up some of my treasures. ;) Although the person that got some of your things I know absolutely love them too. Thanks for joining in with us!

  12. You have had so many great salvage pieces! I still have more than I can really use too. One of my favorites of yours is the botanical prints in the window frame. But I just love that photo with that chair and fabulous pillow too.

  13. I, too, absolutely LOVE using architectural salvage pieces! It's always my favorite find to bring home, hands down. Right now I'm trying to justify bringing home an old door that came with my daughter's house -- she doesn't want it, but it's huge! Oh well, decisions, decisions:) Thanks so much for sharing at Vintage Charm! xo Kathleen

  14. Oooh so many beautiful chippy salvage pieces that you have used previously and currently! The window pane with the botanical prints is one of my favorites. I love the porch column in your current home and of course that tabletop conservatory you have shared in older posts is wonderful too. I am so glad you kept your favorite door, it works well behind the potting bench!

I also think of old furniture decorative pieces as architectural salvage. Many times they look similar to decorative embellishments or carvings you would see on a porch or fireplace, so when displayed above a door or window they really take on the look of architectural salvage.

So many beautiful salvage ideas to pin here. Great post!
