Using Vintage Dishes in Seasonal Decorating Hop

Hello friends, I'm so happy you've come by today and I hope you'll be checking out the fun that we're having at this bi-monthly Hop, Lifestyle of Love. Cindy from County Road 407 is our hostess with these wonderful vintage themed Hops. If you hopped over from Amber's blog, Follow the Yellow Brick Home, I know you loved her wonderful collection of vintage ironstone, pottery and dishes.

This month our Hop theme is "dishes" if you haven't guessed already, and I can guarantee that you'll find tons of inspiration on using dishes in seasonal decor. Whether you're a die-hard tablescaper and dish collector, or someone like me who just loves using them in vignettes and vintage decor, I know you'll love all the ideas from our group.

Most of us who love vintage also love to decorate with vintage dishes. I've always found antique and vintage dishes to be a wonderful way to add charm and color to any seasonal decor. When I started selling vintage items at fleas and vintage markets I fell hard for transferware, and really any vintage and antique china and dishes. Since then I started collecting bits and pieces of mostly transferware when I could find them; mostly when they were at an affordable price.

I'm not a "dish obsessed collector" like many are. (Not that there's anything at all wrong with that, I've just never had the space for multiple sets of china and dishware) And, when we moved this last time I did do a purge of dishes that I didn't use often. My thing is looking for designs and colors that can easily be mixed and matched in table settings and in small seasonal vignettes.

Adding dishes to a vignette brings in extra texture, graphics, and seasonal color.
I use dishes, ironstone and china throughout the year,
but today I'm focusing on displays and vignettes for Spring and early Summer.

Recently I put together a springtime display on the farmtable in the Garden Room
using green transferware and a few vintage pieces in an Ivy pattern.
This is how I love making a seasonal vignette with adding dishes...

My wedding china was French Faience. I've not used it much because as pretty as it looks in a cabinet display, it isn't very appetizing when filled with food. (too much pattern and color) So, I love to use it during Spring and Summer with it's beautiful hand painted flowers and roses. It also pairs easily with green or red transferware. My Holiday Cupboard is a fun way to display dishes and odds and ends that put together a theme for any and all seasons.

Here's a Spring look from last year.

Whatever dishes aren't being used in the Holiday Cupboard
stay in the China Cabinet that matches my casual kitchen set.

Before I had the Holiday Cupboard at this house
I used the Baker's Rack to display extra pieces of china and pottery.
I love to display pieces stacked together and corralled in a tray or crate.

This Easter themed display from several years ago had a few pieces of my faience tucked into a seedbox. I love vintage garden pieces, so this pattern along with the transferware fits right in.

Several years ago at our previous home I put together a French Country
Easter Buffet using my faience with vintage Easter themed pieces.

During one of our moves I located a box of my grandmother's china
that I remember her using for holiday gatherings when I was a child.
The vintage Homer Laughlin Pink Flowered Dishes
took on a fresh new look for Spring.

Instead of collecting full sets of dishes, I've always gravitated to small feminine floral teapots. This post I did several years ago celebrates Of Roses and Redoute, paired vintage French prints, floral teapots, and a small bouquet of knockout roses.

One of the few actual tablescapes I've created originated with this little wooden wheelbarrow filled with a ceramic rabbit tureen and a bumper crop of faux veggies. I had so much fun creating this small late spring tablescape with a vintage garden theme.

using mixed pieces of green transferware and vintage seed packet graphics.

These have been just a few of my ideas and decor themes using vintage dishes. I hope you'll continue the Hop and head on over to visit Stacy at Bricks-n-Blooms where she's sharing her china cabinet and hutch decorated for Spring. I hope you'll visit again soon. You can also catch me on Intstagram and Pinterest sharing my latest vintage fun with decor.

  4. I love how you have used dishware in your decor over the years. It's always been such an inspiration to me. I guess I fall into the catagory of dishware obsessed. I really need to do a purge but I've struggled to make that happen. The cardboard bunny and lamb are darling.

  10. Debra, you know how much I love dishes, and even though we downsized and I purged so many, I still cannot resist pretty dishes. I just try to buy fewer, not complete sets. I always enjoy seeing yours and how you use them seasonally. Don't you just love having the two cupboards now to decorate? The baker's rack is fun, but the solid shelving really makes it so much easier to display. But that's where all your great crates and baskets come in so handily to garner your vignettes. ALways fun to see your styling.
