Cows in the January Cupboard

How do you feel about January?
Are you excited about a clean slate and look forward
to putting together some fun fresh decor
or does it take a while to get out of the post Holiday season blahs?
I guess I'm somewhere in the middle.
I love the  excitement and cozy Christmas decor with lots of color and twinkle lights,
but I'm usually ready to put it all away and look forward to
a more pared down and neutral look.

In January the Garden Room becomes a place of soft neutral colors
with a touch of faint pastels as I look forward to Valentine's Day.

The Holiday Cupboard is a place that reflects the seasons and holidays,
using transferware and some vintage elements...
and of course there are some vintage prints and ironstone mixed in.
It's my fun place.

Since it's winter, there are still some evergreen trees and pinecones scattered about.
My Currier and Ives winter Horse Drawn Sleigh metal tray,
and two vintage snowy "winter" prints of churches are here.

I'm back to the Brown Transferware, from the Red at Christmastime.

But one of my favorite elements in this month's cupboard
are my old Staffordshire cows and vintage Cordon Bleu creamers.
Oh, and one little fluffy sheep who lives here in the cupboard year round.

The little brown cow is from an old Nativity set
that escaped to join the herd.

I think this little bovine may be a honey pot,
since it has a small ladle opening on the back, but no markings on the bottom.

Missing a horn? no matter,
this little porcelain mom and calf are Staffordshire.

a small antique crazy quilt heart in darker suiting colors...

This little brown transferware teapot, sugar and creamer
are "Manor Vista "from "Style House"; midcentury Japan.

A trio of vintage ironstone soup and vegetable tureens...

I'm already thinking about the cupboard for Valentine's Day and early Spring!
I'll be sharing more of my winter decor in the Garden Room soon.

from last year you can take a peek HERE.

On a personal note...
My hubby finally retired after 40 years with the same company.
He always worked long hours and often went in on the weekend.
We've been planning this for several years,
but he had to get things in place at the company.
So... I'm cooking more and talking (laughing) more and staying busy(er).
I'm not a real fan of breakfast in the early morning.
I'm more of a late brunch type person,
so he tries to feed me too often.
He takes care of his own breakfast and lunch
and we give each other space.
I've not shown any pics of our basement since we moved,
but downstairs he has a large office and a living area,
his exercise equipment, and a bedroom and bath.
He does get to sleep upstairs, though.

I let him out at dinner, haha.
just kidding, y'all.
There has been a lot of "togetherness" this last year.
Anyone else navigating retirement?

  2. So many things I love about your new arrangement. Rings all my bells. LOVE the Staffordshire cows. SO rare to turn up those anywhere here. I also love the little framed prints and scenes. One of the reasons I love transferware so much. Lovely details.

  4. I like your cows, too. Forty years with the same company?! Wow! That's impressive. Enjoy your new "togetherness."

  5. How fun to have a "January" cupboard! Love your collection of cows and how you've styled it. Didn't even notice the broken horn until you mentioned it. So cute. Definitely a keeper anyway. :)

  6. ♫♪Cows in the cupboard....sounds like it could be a catchy tune, Debra. :) I love all the cows, especially those less than perfect ones. They often sit on the shelves at antique malls just waiting for their forever home. Brown transferware makes a perfect reprise for winter too. You are really inspiring with as many times as you've decorated the holiday cupboard in this past year!
As for navigating retirement, it does take time to settle into a new norm. It's good you have the space for separateness. I think everyone needs and deserves that. I think it's important to keep your own schedule too, at least until either of you feel the desire to sync up schedules a little more. The fact that we're still pretty much home confined does add another layer of complexity. Good luck in this new phase!

  7. Love this January cupboard. Your Currier and Ives tray brings back memories for me. My mom had a large cookie tin when I was growing up with the same scene on it. I wish I had that tin today. Than you for a lovely post.

  8. I want to thank you for turning me on to brown transfer ware. I really never noticed it before I started following your blog. I just love it and am always on the lookout for it.

  9. I had to laugh at your paragraph about retiring....we went through this in 2006, and then again in 20011, lol. He went back to work at a blah job for our sanity and marriage. Now, we are like two old, over ripe peas in a pod. A bit tough and still a little sweet...grins! It is an adjustment! Hugs, Sandi

  10. Debra, I love that you call it the Holiday Cupboard! I like your touches of hearts along with all the herd of cows. You know I'm a bovine loving girl! Thanks for sharing close ups of the different vignettes. So enjoyed this post!
As for myself, I love January and the coziness of winter. I leave out a few tabletop trees with twinkle lights and bring out my snowmen.

  11. Congratulations on the retirement. Bill's working from home means we are experiencing more togetherness than we have had in 37 years. I love the cows. They are darling.
