Vintage Fall Front Porch

Well, I finally got my front porch put together for Fall a few weeks ago. This year's version is much more enjoyable than last, since last year we were in the middle of a big landscape ordeal. Which means even though my front porch was intact, the rest of the yard was a disaster. Well hey, the front porch wasn't even that great because the workmen would tromp all over things, leave their fast-food drink and lunch debris and generally thought of it as their "personal closet" for all their junk. That meant daily clean up, but it was worth it.

this year
(no overgrown and claustrophobic shrubbery)

(last year)
The porch actually looks pretty good,

back to 2020

I went with smaller mums this year because the large ones were just crazy expensive. I've learned a big lesson about planting mums in a pot with actual dirt vs. just sitting the plastic pot in a container. The planted ones seem to last longer and have some growth during the Fall season, but they are also fair game for the squirrels and chips using the lovely enticing black dirt for their nut receptacle. The lavender mums in the old white urns are a mess, with busted stems from walnuts and acorns. really hard to be mad at a chipmunk...

oh well...
Last year I used a little wheelbarrow out here,
but this year I brought out the small Frenchy tabletop wagon
and my orange vintage watering can.

This year I took a minute and coated the pumpkins with a light coat
of polyurethane to keep the critters from chewing on them.
love this image!

We've been in a mini-drought here this last part of Summer and early Fall, so the grass is not in good shape. We have a very nice all encompassing irrigation system but the yard is so big it has been way too expensive to water every day.

I'm so happy with the new timber frame front porch and the new plantings. It really improved the curb appeal of the house. It's not a good thing when you pull in the drive way and cringe.

I'll let you in on a little secret...
see those gold mums in the wagon?
They're not real, but from Hobby Lobby.
yep, fakeroni.
They weren't cheap but with 40% off they're doable,
plus the fact they're not tasty or have to be watered.
I think they look real.

This year I'm using the bigger wicker door basket,
and decided to go with full-on "Hey-it's-Fall" orange foliage.
Put on your sunglasses.

I found the vintage metal depot bench several years ago
for the last house, and it fits this porch perfectly.

I found these fun paisley outdoor pillow covers here.

After I finished all the photos
I decided to add a few faux berries and leaves
to the Autumn Greetings sign.

I always seem to come back and tweak things once I see photos.

Hope you have a great weekend.
We've had a little warm up this week,
but back to normal Fall temps this weekend.

Here are a few past Fall porches...

  4. Looks great, Debra. I love the flat basket on the door, and those mums in the cart look real - awesome! Of course, textiles always draw me in and make a vignette all the better. I always had problem with squirrels eating my Indian corn just as soon as I'd put it outside! Bet you're glad all that landscaping wasn't going on THIS yr, but then again, it would seem fit for the s___show this yr has been so far.

  7. Your porch is all-around gorgeous. Nothing wrong with buying faux mums, especially since the real ones only last so long. That squirrel picture is so funny -- we had a racoon steal two heirloom pumkpins this year -- sigh. Thanks for sharing at Vintage Charm. xo Kathleen
