It's an August Thing...

This has been a crazy week and it's only Thursday...

Our younger daughter and her hubby moved this week and even though we couldn't help a lot we still have been running back and forth across town to give them a small helping hand. We've personally moved too many times, and this week reminded me that it's such hard work and emotionally draining. It's not easy for the older crowd and much better left to the 20 and 30 somethings. Because of the low low mortgage rates the housing market here is going strong, with houses selling in just a few hours of being listed. Glad it's not me this time.

I've been adding in sunflowers and darker harvest colors around the house.
Today, I'm back in the Garden Room shuffling things around.
This large vintage needlepoint sunflower pillow is perfect for late summer.
It's a dark brown background; almost black.

A big milestone this week; I hadn't been to Hobby Lobby since last Fall. crazy. The only times I've been getting out is for a doctor's appointment, or hair appointment. My husband does the grocery shopping and I basically order things I need online. So I ran by the HL while I was out and grabbed a few things for Fall. Nothing I really needed, but just looking for a little Fall buzz. I found these amazing silk mums that totally look like the real thing. (above) I also bought a "bunch" of brown eyed daisies and gold spikey things that mixed together make a cute realistic late-summer bouquet.

I've had a sunflower and chicken thing going on lately. August is just that month and has been for years. It's my decorating segue into Fall, and I'm loving the browns and golds and olive greens. My Garden Room/sun room is where I can go full on seasonal. So these are a few pics of the chippy church pew with my vintage sunflower pillow, a black floral needlepoint and a Frenchy fruity botanical print pillow.

...of course I'm using my tried and true black ticking pillows with them.

You all have seen this antique print before,
and it's one of my very favorites.
It checks all my Fall vibes with the river and landscape
and the River Birch trees.
This landscape scene could be any place in Missouri.

The old white metal trunk holds art paper, craft supplies, and vintage ephemera.
I painted it years ago. I can't even remember what color it used to be...

My tabletop Frenchy wagon has the small olive bucket and a mini cottage.
A few of my old yellow garden tools add to the summer look.

I keep some of my concrete pieces out here to rotate,
and this concrete fruit topiary is showing off this week.

So many of you have mentioned that you all are getting out your sunflower decor too. I tried growing them years ago, but I need to get some seeds out next spring. I have a few sunny spots that would probably be perfect. How are things at your place? Are you looking forward to Fall? How do you transition to Fall decor and when? I have to do a bit at a time, and ease into the seasonal changes.

Have a great rest of the week!

Hope you'll come by Monday evening.

  4. We just visited a sunflower farm this week and it was amazing to adventuring a field of giant nodding flowers. I love your needlepoint pillows. Have you seen those needlepoint pumpkins? They come out and are listed and snapped up quickly by collectors. They are pricey but lovely

  5. Mentioning those needlepoint pumpkins made me think to check if any were listed yet. Strangely enough they were listed today, so I quickly went to the Wollman website. All gone already!

    1. oh I know, Carole. I had to fight for 2 of them last Fall. Check out my archived posts, https://www.commonground-do.com/2019/10/the-fall-dining-room-and-needlepoint.html try that link. hope you can snag one or two, stay persistent and set your alarm to be there early and ready to go.

  6. I love those pillows on that garden bench, and the painting, Debra. Yes, I am transitioning toward Fall. I've set a fall table and, with one of my recent estate sales, bought a small watercolor very similar to your river birches. I placed it alongside a watercolor of a tree on our old property which a neighbor painted and gifted to us. Cooler temps this week have prompted my fall mood!

  8. I really liked your pillows. My late mother-in-law did needlepoint and gave me an appreciation of it; I even did a bit back in the day! I love making "lumbar" pillows out of placemats that have a tapestry look--quick and simple! I could become a pillow-holic with very little encouragement! Originally from NH, I especially liked your picture as NH's state tree is white birch.
