Sunflowers for a Late Summer Dining Room

Since August shows up a little later in the week, I'm adding some "Late Summer" color with Sunflowers. They're the perfect way to transition into Early Fall. Real or faux, spread them around for some "happy face" time. You just can't look at Sunflowers without a big smile showing up. I'm adding a touch of "Late Summer" here in the Dining Room on the buffet with a few Sunflowers and prints.

Sunflower botanical illustrations are my favorite, because they are so precise and detailed, plus they tend to have more of a vintage look and feel. These two prints came from old Cavallini calenders that I've saved, and also calender prints are inexpensive and easily obtained.

I'm a wimp this time of year and I just can't handle the heat like I used to. So, I always start thinking about Fall a little earlier than most people. Lower temps get me revved up for some late Summer inspiration. A mini flower nosegay in a small silver vase under glass is a sweet way to start bringing in some deep color that is in keeping with this time of year. Before we know it mums will be blooming with deep reds, purples and golds.

I found this wonderful old shabby, chippy white frame in my stash.
It's perfect to show off this Sunflower Botanical.

Another smallish English Cottage Print
with a lush Cottage Garden is in it's original frame.

I put together this fabric runner here on the Dining Room Table from a 3 yard piece of fabric. I've used it for a few years this time of year, since it's warm deep hues reflect late Summer flowers.

I've had this wonderful metal basket for years. It used to be black, but several years ago it was just screaming "French Gray" so I took the plunge, emptied it of it's dense moss covered foam base, and hand painted it with Chalk Paint. It's full of Hydrangeas that I keep year round; then I add or subtract seasonal flowers.

A print doesn't always have to be "framed". This print is just taped to an old brown foxed art canvas. I love the tattered edging and speckled fabric on the frame.

Do you make changes this time of year before Fall?
It helps me be patient to wait another month!

Sunflowers are showing up in other places around the house,
you'll see more of them the rest of this week.

  1. Hi Debra,
I love all your fall decor. So pretty. The flowers under glass are so pretty. I feel like I just got into summer here in Illinois. With moving and getting summer temps late I just cannot get into fall just yet. I love fall but I need to have a little more summer before I think of fall decor. Love your sweet runner too. It all is so pretty. Happy New Week.
    Hugs,
    Kris

    1. thanks Kris. Not ready for "Fall" Fall. Just dipping my toes into late Summer, pre early Fall, haha. No, you've moved and need to just relax and enjoy all your gorgeous flowers. We don't have bad winters like you all, so I don't blame you for holding off on cooler weather. I'd like Fall to last for 4 months. I'm a sweater weather girl. xo

  3. I LOVE those changes, especially on top of the buffet! Yes, I am itching to make changes, and even went to storage to pull some late summer/fall florals. I've made a couple changes, hope to soon make more!

  4. I love seeing your home again! I actually like the lower ceilings---its cozy and comortable, somehow more intimate. Love the botanical cloche. As for decorating--at the moment, just watering the garden and keeping up with house chores is all I can do. I've been to the basement once in three months and i'm in therapy for my knee, waiting for a replacement surgery date. I would love to go find my stash of fall flowers, because I'm like you---and love the warm tones of 'late summer'...!

  6. Your sunflowers add such a great pop of color this time of year. I'm a huge fan of botanical prints as well. Might just have to fish out some of my old prints and hang them up for fall. Thanks for sharing at Vintage Charm. xo Kathleen

  8. You have a lovely selection of sunflower prints. They are one of my favorite blooms to paint in watercolor. The blooms just make me smile when I drive past a field of them all facing the sun! Thanks for sharing!
