Scenes from the Patriotic Sitting Room

Hi Everyone...can you believe the 4th of July is next weekend?
Before it's come and gone, I thought I'd share with you
a few pics from the Kitchen Sitting Area
where I've added a few flags and some Patriotic Color.

I wanted to keep things simple in here,
so the first thing I did was put out a white quilt as a base,
then add some pillows.
I know it's a stretch for French Toile and the Stars and Stripes on one sofa,
but I was going for the reds and blues, and nothing too overdone.

I changed out my little tool carrier with some red transfer ware
and an old chippy red flowerpot with ivy.

I can't take credit for this fun flag mason jar candleholder.
I found it on Pinterest, as I'm sure many of you have seen.

It's an easy fix, just take a small flag and wrap around the jar
 with garden twine or string.
I have a votive candle inside, or a tea light would do.

This tote is pretty small, but since I move it a few times each day
I didn't want anything too big or cumbersome.

I have several pairs of old flags,
so these are tucked behind the mirror with a little garland of faux flowers.

I finally changed out the old watering can's Spring Daffodils
for a more Summery Bouquet.

It's been a month since my CTO heart surgery, and I'm getting better at a snail's pace. I have better blood flow through that artery and I'm really thankful, it's just that it's taking what seems forever to get the anemia dealt with. I've been taking high powered iron supplements, but it's only been this last week that I have gotten past the dizziness and weakness that I've been living with for the last 9 months. That has kept me from driving and doing much. It took a loss of a lot of blood during the surgery for the doctors to realize I was anemic and have been for my whole life. I just thought my heart was to blame for the weakness and overwhelming fatigue, not realizing that it was a combination of things that was my problem. I have an appointment with a new Internal Medicine doctor, so I'm hoping we can get to the bottom of what this blood problem might be.

I'm sorry I don't have fun new things to share and honestly, it can be a little boring around here. At times, I think I just won't post anything, but I do have a little spark left in me to stay with the blog and hope that soon I'll be back to more of my old self, sharing a few new shops and fun places. Thanks for hanging in there with me, and all your encouragement. I've said before I don't like talking about my health woes with you all. I like to keep this a place for some inspiration and creativity, but that just wouldn't be completely honest, so you're stuck with the truth, ha ha! OK, just pretend you're seeing this for the first time! lot's of love...have a great weekend!

  1. I won't give medical advice, but I HAVE to recommend that you ask your doctor about iron infusions (through IV). This last Fall, I was desperately sick due to extremely low iron and low CBC count. My body was almost shutting down. I asked three doctors about IV iron and they said they "don't do that kind of thing". Then, my fabulous internal medicine specialist recommended it. I had 5 infusions and I was like a new person. This doctor told me it would have taken 2 - 2 1/2 years to get my levels up via oral iron supplements. That is a long recovery. Anyways, I hope my "tale of woe" can somehow help you. I just know how you must feel. You have my empathy, prayers, and good thoughts.

    1. thankyou, Michelle! My cardiologists don't realize how bad it's been, they're just interested in my arteries, even though angina is worsened by anemia. I'll check with my new doctor when I visit, this has been the absolute pits, and I don't know what's causing it. thanks so much for the info!

  7. Debra,
    S l o w progress is PROGRESS, dear friend!
As far as the anemia, have you tried adding "cherries" to your diet?
They are h i g h in iron! I get mine in several times a week through a black cherry yogurt.
L o v e the US Flags flying high above your settee!
You are truly, an inspiration to me!
Thank you for continuing with blogging!
    Happy Fourth of July!

  10. I know I told you this before, Debra, but you should really trying juicing spinach and tomatoes with other vegetables to be restored. I was so anemic, when my mom did this for me, that I couldn't even sit up because my head pounded so hard. Of course, this is hard if you have no one to make it for you. If I was near you, I would do it for you. I think I told you that the doctor said he had never seen someone recover from anemia at that level so quickly.
The picture of the patriotic decor is so charming. I love the flags over the mirror. The U.S.A. and French fabric works perfectly. Especially if you are French and American like many of us are. Hope you feel better soon.

I am so glad that they are getting to the problem of your illness. I know it's hard to be sick and not have the energy to do things, but with time it will get better. Take care of yourself and good luck with your new Doctor.

  19. Debra,
Glad to hear that you are feeling better. Have you ever had Venefer IV transfusion to built up the iron in your blood? We use this all the time in anemic patients after surgery rather than just giving them a blood transfusion. Your sitting room looks lovely!! Sending Feel Better wishes your way along with prayers...
    Hugs,
    Deb

  24. I love all of your flag pillows! They look so cute in there. I still need to decorate my porch for this weekend. I don't usually do too much inside. I'm glad that you're starting to feel better. I understand having days of fatigue and generally not feeling well. I hate to hear that you've been dealing with it so long! Hopefully, your new doctor will be a blessing.

  27. I am glad you are doing better.

I discovered your blog in the summer of 2013 and I kept going back to look at your posts and get ideas. In fact, I see one that I will be copying soon. We have a great wooden bench in the garden, but I want to spice it up. My husband doesn't want a cushion, but I think now I'll just put a quilt down on the bench. I see on your wicker bench that the quilt is just wrapped around another cushion.

    Thanks for the inspiration.
