Kitchen Counter Vignette

Do you have a spot in your house
where things are moved around...
added and subtracted...
left for days
because you don't know how to use them in your decor?

...a glorified "staging area".
waiting to be blogged about...
hoping to make the cut?

yes, I have one of those spots.
(sometimes more than one)

but my kitchen bar counter is the one that's the biggest culprit.
It divides the Kitchen and the Living Room,
and more than not,
there are little goodies waiting to be blogged about;
biding their time, waiting for a spot.

I've had a dozen things here...
but I finally whittled it down,
so as not to be over the top crazy.

this is in the category of
"too much of a good thing".

I made this for a kitchen table centerpiece,
but it was too hard to move daily...
the squirrel kept falling out.

I keep this heavy silver tray and topiary here all year,
the rest changes out for the season.

My mom gave me this little Japanese Majolica teapot years ago.
I remember having it at our house growing up.
And my daughter gave me the paper mache squirrel box,
it's one of my favorite things!
(he used to have a paper acorn in his hands,
but that's long gone too.)

see, here's a cool brown bottle, that I still want to use,
and this little jug with fall leaves and a bird.
(I'm not sure where they are now...)

gotta have a Fall Candle going...

and the pumpkin I made circa late 70's.
lid was broken about 10 years ago.
(repair job is not pretty)
gosh, it's an antique by now.

I chalk this up to having more good stuff than I have sense  space.

So where do you have a pile up?
I'm hoping I'm not the only one out here...

joining in here:

xoxo,

Did you catch my last post?

  1. Debra,
I adore each and every piece in your "pile up" dear friend!!!
Mine would have to be in the open shelf of the built~in china cabinet!!!
It starts out simple, then I blog about it and when I turn around . . .it's a "pile~up"!!!
Thanks for sharing all your charming treasures!!!
    Fondly,
    Pat

  2. My husband would answer that question quickly - "every surface in the house" (which is not true at all). Instead, my like counters get dumped with his junk, like sunglasses, lock for a bike, keys, coupons....drives.me.crazy.

  3. That paper mache squirrel is one of my favorites. He is adorable on the bar with the other cuties. I usually have a staging tote in the corner of the dining room. I put it away for company and haven't tweaked with my stuff since.
Blogging may look nice in photos but there is always stuff lurking just out of view.

  7. Debra,
I could have written this post and substituted photos. My little bar area connecting the kitchen and living room and then the counter around the corner just gets filled with the things I need and the things I love. Sooo hard! And it's also a 'dropping' point for everything I bring into the house from groceries to plants to laundry Is it the way some of us are wired? Some days I say just go with it, others I say I have to clean up my act!!

Anyway, I simply love that tray and that little squirrel is darling!

  8. Love the honest view of blogging here...so true of all of us I'm sure. I have multiple spots for things that haven't made "the cut" yet and sometimes they just get packed up at the end of season never having had their "debut". Yes, sadly (or is it happily) too much stuff. :) Maybe, like you, we should all just snap a pic of what's on the counter waiting their turn....

  9. Debra,
My pile-ups migrate around the house depending upon what is in the pile-up. My kitchen island sees it fair share as well as the dining table in the living room. If only those elves would come in the middle of the night and clean everything up...

  11. I can so relate! I finally made room inside one of my buffets to keep as a dedicated holding spot for large and small items. It's out of sight and easily accessible if I decide to play. Love both your cute squirrels! ~Ann

  12. Debra, I have more things than I can keep out, so I rotate things with the seasons. Works for me! '-)
Wish I had a large island space such as yours. Our small galley kitchen has limited counter space, and believe me it is prime real estate for "the chef". He is very protective and dictates what can and cannot go on the counters. Ha! If I occasionally sneak in a seasonal cookie jar, he quickly reminds me that the kitchen is his territory.
