Heads Up...

I guess this post could be filed under several topics, but firstly it would have to be the top contender for "you don't know how wrong something looks until you photograph it and then put it out on the blog for thousands of people to see". The next category would be "coming super late to the party".

The second category, first...
This is my first shot at Annie Sloan Chalk Paint.
I know, I know....
don't judge me for being a little slow to get to the party.
LOVE this paint...
dried quick, distressed so easy,
but then you ALL know that don't you?

I've had a can of Old White for over a year, but when you have a husband that's sick
or any kind of family issue, most projects just don't happen...nope. not happening.

(He's much better, long road...but better.
Inner ear surgery for Meniere's Disease)

I've had this wonderful old piece of detailed wood hanging out in the garage for months, taunting me to get my rear in gear and paint it.

but when I saw this photo (below) from a post I did back in March I cringed,
'cause the teensy header I had was lost on the door and flanking windows.
(btw, this post was my highest viewed post ever)

So I finally got around to doing the deed and hopefully making the entry look a little more thought out. I love using old headers and furniture remnants to help beef up the moldings above the room openings. This space could use something even bigger, but until then, I think this will work.

Skinny moldings must have been all the rage in 1982...

This one is above the Entry in the Dining Room.

another smaller one heading toward the Kitchen.

Here is the culprit from the entry that found a new home in the Hallway,
going into the Dining Room.
(I need to straighten it up a bit)

from the Hall into the Powder Room
(and no, that's not dust on the door panels,
I just like a gray film all over things...)

But here's my fave baby of them all.
The hunky piece that got me started on this.

I swooned over those scallops.

In the Kitchen going to the Living Room.

That's just one little thing I can cross off my to-do list.

and a note from Tornado Alley...
we're all so so tired of this.

  3. Oh, Debra, I just love all your doorway headers!! They look so cool and the new one over the front door is just right. I haven't yet tried the AS paint either but have it on my list to order some day and try. I have so many things that need to be painted!! So happy to hear that your husband is doing better. It has to be such a relief after all you have been through. Blessings, Linda

  5. Newest header looks great over the entry doorway, and the previous runt looks fantastic over the hallway to DR!

Glad to hear you're ok...thought of you as I was seeing the warnings last night on the news. We've had some scary thunderstorms here, one year one was even called a tornadic thunderstorm, and last year we got the brunt of the derecho in our state, but can't imagine year after year & the stress that would cause. Stay safe,my friend!

  7. What a great piece that is, Debra! I have a too small piece over our front door, but I figure it is out of the way for now. : ) I'd like to get one that is longer and takes in the width of the door and molding. Welcome to chalk paint! I think it is great to read the posts of people using it for the first time. We were all first timers at one point!

  14. You may be late to the Annie Sloan party, but you know some parties don't really get started until some fun-loving person shows up. Yepper, the party can now officially begin with the arrival of your fantastic door moldings! How many people are now inspired to add door moldings? Hold up your hands. MY HAND IS WAY UP IN THE AIR.

Got to go now and find some door moldings.

  18. Oh my goodness Debra, you and I must be cut from the same cloth. After I posted pictures of my bedroom and seeing the dinky little header over my big window and I did the same thing. We were probably even working on them the same day. lol I took a piece from a footboard of a full size bed and the size is so much better.
All of your headers are wonderful!
    Have a great weekend

  27. It's amazing how the camera lens can show us the ways of our err, just like looking in several mirrors at our make up before we walk out the door!! I love what you've done. Never knew they were called headers. The problem in my old home is that all of the doorways are rounded at the top. Back in the day I draped them with faux flowers but no, no, no...never again! ;-D

  30. So funny, I just went to a garage sale yesterday and picked up a piece of molding that looks just like yours...AND, I planned to paint it with Old White Chalk paint AND put it over my door. Too coincidental.
Hoping you are storm free for the rest of the season.

  31. I am VERY late to the chalk paint party too and I have no excuse! I have a shop that sells it within walking distance of my house! It is pricey and I am afraid...those are my excuses! The girl that owned the shop said I could do all my kitchen cupboards with it (that is my must-do next project) and it would look gorgeous. It would be an investment. Your door hanger came out gorgeous! Maybe I will try it on something small first!

  32. Such a great idea to use these architectural pieces this way! You may be "late" to chalk paint but I JUST used my circular saw to make a box LOL. I've NEVER cut wood or hammered a nail to make a project!
